About the Department

The College of Engineering (COE) Facilities group manages the space assigned to the College and plans for future space assignments. The unit also serves as the primary liaison with various units outside of Engineering including but not limited to Environmental Health and Safety, the University Architect’s Office, Capital Project Management, Design and Construction Services, University Partnership Office, Facilities Operations, University Dining, Transportation, and the University Real Estate and Development Office. Occasionally the unit also works with the Office of Information Technology, the Registrar’s Office, Contracts and Grants, University Planning and Analysis, etc. though the unit is not the primary contact for the COE with these offices.

COE occupies over 715,000 assignable square feet spread over more than 40 different buildings at multiple campuses and as far away as Asheville, NC.

Essential Job Duties

The Director of Facilities and Operations for the College of Engineering is responsible for the overall facilities and facility operations for research, teaching and service (in cooperation with COE units and University units). This includes environmental health and safety, physical security, space allocations and records, new construction, remodeling, upfit, maintenance, project management, power, water, supply gases, and HVAC, campus relocations, special deliveries and rigging, transportation, logistics, scheduling. Campus and state approvals for all above.

Duties of the Director of Facilities and Operations include but are not limited to the following:
  • Serve as primary point of contact with the Facilities Division for routine maintenance/repairs associated with the College of Engineering Dean’s Office as well as any large or irresolvable issues involving COE academic, research, or extension departments.
  • Serve as primary point of contact with the Facilities Division for minor renovation projects, major renovation projects, and capital projects associated with the College of Engineering. Most recent new capital project was $154 million for Fitts-Woolard Hall.
  • Serve as primary point of contact with the University Architects Office for space planning and tracking metrics.
  • Serve as primary point of contact with on-campus leasing agency University Real Estate and well as multiple private landlords.
  • Manage contracts with private service providers for toxic gas monitoring systems, crane/hoist inspections, ultra-pure water treatment systems, acid waste system, fume hood fire suppression systems, and clean room VESDA systems.
  • Alert EH&S Division to all new equipment installations involving hazardous materials and/or processes and work with personnel there to ensure safe installations and operations.
  • Work with Security Applications and Technologies to ensure safe and secure buildings and manage building access levels for Engineering faculty and staff.
  • Supervise the College of Engineering’s Assistant Director of Facilities as well as the College of Engineering Machine Shop.
  • Manage office and equipment moves with moving companies and riggers.
  • Work with the Materials Management group for removal and disposal of surplus property.
  • Serve as primary point of contact with units such as Registration and Records, Transportation, University Dining, University Housing, Campus Recreation, Fire Marshal, Campus Police, and many other non-academic departments and divisions on campus.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Post-baccalaureate degree or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Architecture, or Physical Sciences or a related field with at least three years of equivalent professional training and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency with basic computer software programs (word processing, spreadsheets, Adobe Acrobat (PDF), etc),
  • Ability to use AutoCAD or similar CAD software
  • Ability to gain proficiency in University-specific software programs (FM Interact, AERES, AIM work management, etc.)
  • Ability to occasionally work outside and withstand seasonal heat and cold, ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Space planning or construction management experience in a University environment, preferably representing both the academic and business operations of the institution
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license strongly preferred
