The School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona invites applications to apply to a position as a Livestock Biotechnology Extension Specialist, starting as soon as July 1 for the start of the FY23.

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver statewide Extension programming that is industry-responsive, proactive, and related to livestock management, including tribal producers. This position will require travel as needed to University County Extension and Farms locations.

Duties & Responsibilities This position is a fiscal (12-month) continuing/continuing-eligible appointment with 65% Extension, 25% Research, and 10% Services at the rank of Assistant/Associate Specialist in the School of Animal and Comparative Biomedical Sciences (SACBS).
It is expected that the successful applicant will conduct collaborative research with emphasis on beef cattle but also on small ruminants.
Work closely with state extension offices, state producers, and have access to large and small animal facilities, including the Agricultural Research Center (which includes facilities for environmental control of large animals), the VBarV Ranch, the Santa Rita Experimental Ranch, the Food Product Safety Laboratory, and the Animal Feeding Facility.
The successful candidate will be expected to deliver statewide Extension programming that is industry-responsive, proactive, and related to management of livestock, including tribal producers. They are expected to collaborate with existing faculty members both on and off campus, and to increase the impact and visibility of the animal science program. Extension and Research efforts should be organized and conducted in cooperation with other statewide faculty, county Extension faculty, and federal and state agency representatives. The successful candidate will actively seek contract and grant funding to support this program. Communication of research results in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and scientific and trade publications is an essential requirement of this position.
The successful candidate will join a highly productive and innovative group of faculty working to address opportunities utilizing biotechnology to enhance livestock management. SACBS has strong research and extension programs in (especially metabolic, cardiovascular, and developmental physiology and immunobiology), animal disease and food safety. The candidate is expected to develop collaborations within SACBS and across the state.
We encourage applications from candidates with experience in livestock biotechnology for enhancing livestock production. In particular, we are interested in applicants who can complement existing Extension expertise in nutrition, animal physiology, genetics, and animal diseases. We strongly encourage applicants interested in applying new biotechnologies including but not limited to (GPS environmental sensors, biometric sensors, DNA profiling, genetics, etc.). We prefer candidates whose Extension and Research program will be focused on sustainable animal production.
The successful candidate will provide a research environment to support undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral scholars that is inclusive, supportive, and intellectually challenging. The candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills working with industry stakeholders and researchers and contribute more broadly to College and University strategic goals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or equivalent in animal sciences, biotechnology, or related field
  • Experience with livestock production systems
  • Demonstrated experience working with livestock producers and industry stakeholders
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Extension in livestock management and biotechnology.
  • Research experience in animal sciences and biotechnology.
  • Experience working with tribal producers.
  • Demonstrated history of peer-reviewed original research publications in recognized scientific journals.
  • Demonstrated history of securing extramural funds.
