Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Medicine is a very complex organization. Our specialties include allergy, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, hematology, immunology, infectious disease, nephology, nutrition, oncology, pulmonary medicine and rheumatology. Administration of the department must provide a management structure that coordinates and supports the activities of the large, complex and heterogeneous organization. The Department of Medicine is a primary contributor to the mission of East Carolina University School of Medicine, which is to provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina, educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs and to make medical education available to minority and disadvantage people.
The Hematology/Oncology Division of the Department of Medicine has clinical, teaching and research responsibilities. However, the focus remains toward patient care. The division operates an active clinic with more than 800 patients per month. This figure continues to increase dramatically with the new satellite outreach clinics. Although great progress has been made in chemotherapy treatments, because of the nature of the illnesses, a very high percentage of patients either do not respond to conventional therapies or relapse. Therefore, the development of new therapies through basic, translational and clinical research will be vital to increasing effective and distinctive outcomes in treating cancer.
