Position Focus:

The Wu Tsai Institute is an interdisciplinary neuroscience initiative at Yale University founded in 2021 with the mission to understand human cognition and explore human potential. Marking a strategic, cross-university investment by Yale, the Institute unites researchers, departments, and schools at 100 College Street, the Institute's home opening in summer 2023. The Institute stimulates research across disciplines such as biology, cognitive science, computer science, data science, engineering, neuroscience and psychology through funding mechanisms and access to state-of-the-art technology and resources. The Institute advances integrative and inclusive approaches to science through its fellowships and programming for faculty, students, and postdoctoral researchers across the Yale community.

The Center for Neurocognition and Behavior, one of the Institute's three research centers, is building a world-class facility for measuring the healthy human brain and behavior in action. Located on the first floor of 100 College Street with a dedicated entrance, this facility will house state-of-the-art equipment including MRI, MEG, OPM, EEG, NIRS, TMS, VR, eye-tracking, and body motion tracking. These tools are made available to trained faculty, postdocs, grad students, and undergraduates for research and education. The Director of the Human Brain Imaging is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the facility. The position reports to the Managing Director of the Institute, with technical supervision by the Director of the Center for Neurocognition and Behavior.

Ensure the safe running of the human imaging facility including managing staff and overseeing operations. Work with MR users: orient, train, and certify users; provide frequent user consultations on MR study design,; review and provide feedback on application forms from users requesting scanner time and internal funding. Maintain MRI safety and regulatory compliance. Ensure that MRI scanner and ancillary equipment produce high quality imaging data. Support data integrity: maintain informatics platform on data server; ensure that data are transferred in a timely manner; establish real-time interfaces with computer clusters; assist in the development of data sharing infrastructure for Institute; coordinate data analysis and storage needs for human brain imaging with Center for Neurocomputation and Machine Intelligence. Assist with other uses of the facility including tours, special presentations, teaching of research methods and other courses, and supervising independent student research. Support the facility’s integration with the Institute, the University and the wider research community. Other responsibilities as assigned.


Essential Duties

1. Manage the day-to-day operations of shared equipment in a research facility. 2. Supervises administrative and technical staff related to the running of the facility. 3. Develops and implements protocols to facilitate user research. 4. Trains users on the operation and safe use of facility and equipment. 5. Maintains safety and regulatory compliance of facility and equipment. 6. Manages research, consults on research design, and projects associated with research of users. 7. Supports quality, integrity, and security of data outputs of equipment. 8. Designs research processes, implements and projects cost estimates. 9. In close collaboration with Business Office, develops sound business procedures for accurate scheduling and billing. Maintains source documentation for cost accounting purposes. 10. Interacts with vendors, suppliers, manufacturing companies, and other research institutions to develop and design specialized equipment and protocols. 11. Exchanges technical information. Stays abreast of new research technologies and safety advances. 12. May perform other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience

PhD or equivalent in a related field and a minimum of five years related work experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.


Required Skill/Ability 1:

Understanding of MRI technology and associated safety and environmental risks; substantial experience conducting MRI research, including specifying sequence parameters, controlling software console, and operating specialized MRI instrumentation. No contraindications to working in and around the MRI (e.g., implanted electrical devices, etc.).


Required Skill/Ability 2:

Aware of latest advances in MRI data acquisition and analysis; ability to implement these advances at the facility through agreements with vendor and sister institutions; eager to stay up-to-date through reading and reviewing primary literature and/or attending a professional meeting each year.


Required Skill/Ability 3:

Fluency with MRI analysis software, including FSL, Freesurfer, SPM, AFNI, and/or BrainVoyager; training or experience with statistics and experimental design; knowledge of one or more programming or scripting languages, including Python, C, Java, R, Matlab, and UNIX; comfort with networking and high-performance computing.


Required Skill/Ability 4:

Exceptional interpersonal skills; strong service-oriented mindset; support students, postdocs, and faculty at all levels of expertise to help them achieve research goals; performing outreach to identify new users and meet broader research needs. Ability to bear the of responsibility for the safety of others in a highly sensitive research environment.


Required Skill/Ability 5:

Excellent organizational, prioritization, and communication (verbal, writing, presentation) skills; acute attention to detail; ability to handle multiple tasks with conflicting deadlines effectively and accurately.


Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Research experience in Psychology, Neuroscience, Physics, Engineering, or related field, including methods development, grant writing, and supervision of trainees. Experience working in or managing a neuroscience core facility focused on human subjects research. Expertise with MRI plus additional technologies listed in the Position Focus.
