Job Description

---

The University of Oklahoma is expanding its research activities in the areas of low-carbon energy and infrastructure, sustainable societies, and global environmental change. Central to these efforts is a focus on equitable social and economic participation in the energy system, while also remediating social, economic, and health burdens on those disproportionately harmed by those systems. Efforts to secure federal funding in these areas will require developing and implementing detailed plans to demonstrate community benefits of the federal dollars requested.

The Institute for Resilient Environmental and Energy Systems is recruiting an Energy Infrastructures and Communities Specialist to support use inspired research and demonstration of technologies that address solutions to grand challenges at the intersection of society-energy-environment. The successful candidate will lead aspects of community benefits planning and reporting for projects with a focus on, inclusion, and accessibility, J40 Initiative, workforce development, and community and labor engagement.  An important emphasis for this position is on issues affecting Tribal Nations and Native American-owned industries which will be addressed through a partnership with the OU Native Nations Center. This is a twelve-month position with the initial two year’s salary provided through central funds at OU. After that time, the position changes to a grant-funded position requiring it be secured through external contracts.

The hired candidate would support development and implementation of proposals and projects to federal agencies, industry, foundations and other funding sources.  The Specialist will work with OU leadership, government, industry, and community partners to establish project-specific goals, conduct community and labor engagement, and environmental justice assessments in project communities, and assist with the design and implementation of inclusion, accessibility and Justice40 strategies.

Specific duties may include assisting with proposal development, conducting environmental justice analyses using secondary demographic data, analysis of community engagement surveys, facilitating community engagement efforts related to energy projects, and helping Native Nations address questions related to the energy and environmental justice needs of their communities. Close coordination with Tribal leadership and professionals is expected and may be done in consultation or collaboration with the Office of the Associate Vice President of Tribal Relations and the Native Nations Center at OU.

About the Institute for Resilient Environmental and Energy Systems : IREES is OU’s hub for researchers, innovators, and practitioners who want to work across disciplines to addresses complex, interconnected, and often competing challenges that lie at the multiple intersections of societal, environmental, and energy systems. IREES pursues resilient solutions to these challenges—solutions that build the capacity to anticipate, prepare for, and drive change in support of a more sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous  future.
