The Opportunity

The Center for Initiatives in STEM (iSTEM) and the Department of Mathematics at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invite applications for a nine-month, full-time, non-tenure earning instructor or lecturer position anticipated to begin August 2023.

The ideal candidate will take a role in developing curriculum and pedagogy with the intent of improving student learning in undergraduate courses in mathematics. Additionally, we are especially interested in an individual who can contribute through their teaching and service to the diversity and excellence of our academic community and foster an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and personal experiences are welcomed and thrive. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in assessment and conduct two-thirds of their teaching duties in mathematics within the EXCEL/COMPASS program which includes teaching the EXCEL STEM Seminar sequence. The  remaining third of their teaching responsibilities will be within the Mathematics Department.

The selected candidate will work directly with iSTEM within the EXCEL/COMPASS program. The mission of EXCEL/COMPASS is to increase success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) during a student’s transition to college by connecting UCF students, faculty, and STEM disciplines while creating a learning community to support discovery and engagement. The Department of Mathematics at UCF offers a full range of mathematics courses for its B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. programs, in addition to providing service courses for the university’s general education program and STEM majors. The College of Sciences (COS) houses most of the university’s natural, computational, and social sciences in eight departments, two schools, and several centers. The college’s programs play a key role in advancing UCF as a national research university that is determined to help students from all backgrounds achieve success. Minimum Qualifications:

An M.S. degree (for instructor rank) or Ph.D. (for lecturer rank) in Mathematics or a closely related field from an accredited institution by the time of hire. In addition, the successful applicant must have undergraduate teaching experience in lower division courses.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with one or more of the following:

  • Equivalent of three years of full-time teaching experience.

  • Experience in STEM education and implementation of student success initiatives.

  • Experience using online technology in mathematics courses.

  • Experience coordinating courses with multiple sections.

  • Experience teaching and managing large lectures.

  • Experience in seeking external funding for educational research.

  • Experience with teaching in upper division courses.
