Job Description

LECTURER, Literature Section, to assume a joint History and Literature appointment in Ancient and Medieval Studies (AMS) with a focus on Greek language, literature, and history. Will complement the research and teaching excellence in AMS, an interdisciplinary undergraduate program that draws students and faculty from across the core disciplines of History, Literature, Architecture, Music, and Philosophy.  The primary responsibility will be to teach three subjects each semester--The Ancient World: Greece and Greek I and II (Intro Greek). Will complement that core with additional subjects that expand on current AMS offerings, which may include--advanced topics in history, a ten-day January term study program in Greece, and topics in ancient authors and literature.  The position involves dynamic and innovative teaching and entails substantive engagement with students during MIT’s nine-month academic year. 

REQUIRED:  at least two years of teaching experience at the university level; master’s degree; ability to cooperate with faculty, students, and staff of all backgrounds and encourage and support a diverse student body.  Seek professionals who will contribute to the program’s goals of inclusivity and equity.  Scholars specializing in any field related to the pre-modern Hellenic world, including Hellenistic, Early Christian, and Byzantine Studies are welcome to apply.  PREFERRED:  Ph.D. (degree in hand by June 30, 2023) in classics or a related field, ability to teach Latin and/or the Bible (Hebrew Bible and New Testament).  Job #22476

A two-year appointment is guaranteed pending successful review in the first year. Indefinite renewals based on mutual agreement may be possible based on funding.
