CAREER SERVICES SPECIALIST

Job Description

As part of the Academic Affairs team, this newly created position provides leadership in the expansion, development and implementation of career services and resources for current and immediately former students of the College of the Environment, with a focus on undergraduate students. In pursuit of connecting students into the environment- and sustainability-related workforce, this position directly engages employers regionally, nationally and internationally; cultivating relationships with key employers to understand current market needs and trends, and prepare students to transition from their academic programs to careers. Recognizing that many College of the Environment students may wish to pursue advanced degrees, this position also provides professional development for successful advancement to the Masters, PhD and professional degrees. This position works most closely with the Undergraduate Student Services Specialist to "bookend" the College of the Environment undergraduate student experience, collectively providing services from prospective student to successful graduate advanced to career next step.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Career Services for Students: 65%

• Develop and manage career events and activities to serve the full range of UW Environment students and recent alumni (undergraduate through PhD); approximately three quarters of this effort focuses on undergraduates and one quarter on graduate students.
• Serve as College of the Environment liaison to the UW Career & Internship Center and the UW Career Group; attend quarterly Career Group meetings.

Environmental Jobs website:

• Manage the Environmental Jobs website, with assistance from Student Assistant(s), including but not limited to: overseeing all posting of job/internship announcements; monitoring envjobs@uw.edu email account for job/internship announcements and responding to user questions; tracking and analyzing website analytics for use in assessment and annual reporting to the Dean.
• Design and implement a plan to significantly increase the number of job posts and the user engagement on the Environmental Jobs website (currently ~125 jobs posted monthly and ~2,200 pageviews monthly). Work with Marketing and Communications team to propose site usability improvements and to create a marketing plan to promote the Environmental Jobs Page via social media, website, etc. to students and recent alumni.

Event Planning:

• Develop and implement a quarterly schedule of programs and activities (e.g., panels, workshops) designed to provide students with professional development opportunities including job search skills, professional communication techniques and application and interview strategies.
• Develop and implement a quarterly schedule of events to connect students directly to employers (panels, speed networking events, on-campus interviews, career fairs, etc.), including oversight and management of the annual Environmental Career Fair.
• Develop and implement a quarterly schedule of programs and activities (e.g., panels, workshops) designed to provide students with tools and skills needed to successfully apply to advanced degree programs.

Career and "Next Step" Advising:

• Due to high volume of UW Environment students, this position will not provide one-on-one career coaching.  Instead, this position will develop group career and next step advising events and activities (and see above).
• Develop online materials and resources to respond to common student needs and questions regarding career services and advanced degree pathways. Collaborate with the Undergraduate Student Services Specialist to create online content that showcases recent alumni and answers the question: “What can I do with a degree in . . .?”
• Leverage and promote UW Career and Internship programming (resume review, cover letter basics, interviewing strategies, career coaching appointments, workshops).
• Collaborate with faculty, capstone instructors, and academic advisors to create resources to help students with techniques to leverage their culminating degree projects, undergraduate research, and internships in their job or advanced degree searches.

Employer Relations and Development: 20%

• Create a curated list of employers that specific College of the Environment programs want to cultivate.
• Provide employers with opportunities (e.g., panels, speed dates, career fair) to interact with College of the Environment students for internships, projects, and fulltime employment.
• Build on the Environmental Career Fair employer contact list, creating a database of employer contacts and recruiters.
• Design and implement a key employers list, and recruit from that list to create and staff an employers advisory board meeting at least semi-annually.
• Develop a baseline of information on the ideal skill sets relevant employers are looking for in their new employees.

Alumni Tracking: 15%

• Collaborate with the Graduate Student & Postdoctoral Services Specialist and the Undergraduate Student Services Specialist to track alumni employment via social media and develop a database of alumni contacts.
• Manage the College of the Environment LinkedIn Alumni Group.
• Serve as lead point of contact for campus-wide alumni surveys managed by the Career & Internship Center and the Office of Educational Assessment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree with 4 years of experience in career services, employment recruiting, or other career counseling or student counseling related experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

• A highly motivated self-starter with an ability to develop strategies, set and meet goals, make decisions independently, and multi-task and prioritize in fast-paced environments.
• Demonstrated leadership with event planning and implementation.
• Web, online and social media savvy, able to create and maintain a strong online and social media presence.
• Team player in both a leading and a supporting role.
• Ability to work with underrepresented populations and students from minoritized and/or marginalized groups.
• Strong quantitative data manipulation skills such as advanced Excel and database capability.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, verbal and written.

DESIRED:

• STEM related or environment-focused degree.
• Environmentally related professional experience.
• Familiarity with the administrative structure of a large university.
• Demonstrated facilitation experience, such as of meetings, workshops and/or presentation panels.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Flexibility and availability to work some evenings and weekends.
• Flexibility and availability for occasional out-of-town travel.
