Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in proposal writing, budgeting, and supervision and/or training
of undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and research staff.
Demonstrated record of research publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with experimental methods and analytical
treatments that are commonly used in magnetic and quantum materials research, including single-crystal growth techniques, heat capacity, magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, transport and magnetotransport characterization methods.
Demonstrated experience with or knowledge of x-ray and neutron scattering and the analysis of powder and single-crystal diffraction data.
Some experience electron beam-based microstructural analysis and semi-quantitative chemical techniques.

The Division of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) is seeking candidates for the position of Scientist. The position will be filled as an Ames National Laboratory Scientist II or III based on the qualifications of the finalist.

This position conceives, designs, and conducts research projects focused on the single-crystal growth and characterization of magnetic quantum materials, including; itinerant magnets, dilute magnetism, frustrated magnetism, and magnetic topological materials. Characterization methods include thermodynamic, magnetization, and electrical transport measurements and analysis.  A key component of the position relates these bulk characterization measurements to x-ray and neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements and other multi-modal experimental methods.  This requirements places an emphasis on the growth of large volume single-crystal specimens.

The position necessitates collaboration with the supervisor and other Principal Investigators (PIs) in the Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering within the Ames National Laboratory; invents, performs and supervises experiments; interprets the results; presents and defends research at professional meetings; drafts manuscripts for publication with collaborating co-authors; guides experimenters in the conduct of experimentation and the interpretation of results; and writes research proposals for future funding of research projects (as PI or co-PI). The duties of this position also include the maintenance and supervision of the daily operation of experimental facilities.

In addition to the above, the Ames National Laboratory Scientist III will have additional leadership roles on research projects including managing budgets and staff. This position will communicate with key stakeholders and implement project management framework.

Demonstrate effective communication skills needed to interface with a diverse team of administrative staff and powder metallurgy professionals, as well as physical sciences and engineering professionals, is essential for success in this position.

  • Ph.D. and 5 years of related experience
