Job Title

Sr. Director, People and Culture

Job Description

The University of Notre Dame has a very ambitious mission – to be a force for good in the world. In order for the more than 5,000 faculty and staff to be able to advance this mission, The Office of Human Resources must support them in a way that enables them to do so.

At the University of Notre Dame, how you do your job is more important than what you do. Yes, we still set ambitious goals for ourselves and strive for excellence daily. However, like our students, who learn from our faculty not only how to think but also how to live, working at Notre Dame will forever change your life.

The Sr. Director of People and Culture role leads a team that will help design and drive innovative and impactful people strategies that build community, while partnering across the organization to cultivate and grow individual and team talents to meet the aspirational goals of Notre Dame. Let us set a vision and make it a reality together. Someone in this role will be passionate about what they do, humble in their approach and animated by a positive and hopeful mindset. We are looking for servant leaders who put the good of the team above self interest. Establish the culture and strategies that others are drawn to because it is supportive, caring, challenging, kind, and fun.

As a strategic talent leader, the three Sr. Directors will be aligned to support the specific Vice Presidents and Deans within an Executive Officer Group (President, Provost, Executive Vice President) to own the People and Culture strategy for each division and department in the entire group. This senior-level HR position will be responsible for tackling the most pressing talent opportunities and challenges at a strategic level and successfully partnering with unit leaders to develop and deliver a comprehensive people strategy. These HR strategies include talent management, organizational effectiveness, workforce planning, and employee engagement.

  • Build authentic relationships with VP’s and Deans to offer thought leadership on organizational and people-related strategy and execution. Understand the strategy and identify opportunities to increase alignment with the strategy by helping leaders identify, prioritize and build organizational capabilities, behaviors, structures and processes.
  • Coach senior leaders to improve leadership abilities, relationships among teams/individuals and interpersonal communications, as well as deliver effective performance feedback.
  • Diagnose gaps between current and desired organization performance and deploy actions to resolve gaps, including organization redesign, process change, coaching and training.
  • Work closely with internal HR COE’s to translate campus unit strategic priorities and build comprehensive and creative HR solutions to deliver successful people strategies across campus.

We are all coming to understand the future of work in a new way. If you are motivated to shape the future, come tell us how you might do that. We are dedicated to making Notre Dame a diverse and inclusive community that people feel not only a deep sense of belonging, but flourish in ways they never imagined while being authentically themselves. In Human Resources we must be intensely present in the current moment, motivated by the mission and traditions of the past, and primed for the bright future of Our Lady’s University.
