The Department of City & Metropolitan Planning (CMP) within the University of Utah’s College of Architecture + Planning invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Planning. This position will be a 9-month appointment (1.0 FTE) to begin on July 1, 2023.

We are interested in candidates whose work occurs at the intersection of planning for diverse populations and topics such as affordable housing, local economic development, trauma-informed planning, and planning for climate change. The successful candidate will be able to work across a range of scales from the neighborhood to the region, potentially addressing issues related to the Intermountain West and engaging local urban and rural communities. Our priority is to hire someone interested in collaborating with local community-based organizations such as the University Neighborhood PartnersNeighborWorks Salt Lake, and other organizations representing Utah’s indigenous, immigrant, Latin/x, or Pacific Islander communities. A doctoral degree in Planning, public policy, or a related field is required by July 1, 2023.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic group of engaged faculty members who are recognized leaders in their fields and highly value collaboration and collegiality. This person will also benefit from the University of Utah’s strong commitment to sustainability and interdisciplinary initiatives. The Department’s BA/BS undergraduate degree in Urban Ecology focuses on exploring the interrelationships among social, environmental, and economic systems, aiming to enhance the vitality and sustainability of places and communities. The Urban Ecology degree is also taught at the Utah Asia Campus in Songdo, South Korea. The Master of City and Metropolitan Planning (MCMP) is an accredited professional degree emphasizing ecological resiliency, smart growth, and social justice through effective communication, collaboration, and innovation. The Ph.D. in Metropolitan Planning, Policy, and Design is a research-focused program. The department also offers a Master of Real Estate Development (with School of Business) and Graduate Certificates in Urban Design, Community Engaged Practices, and Real Estate Development. Responsibilities
  • Developing and maintaining an ongoing program of scholarly research.
  • Teaching in the Department of City & Metropolitan Planning, for example, a graduate-level Community Engagement in Planning course and the Westside Studio.
  • Engaging with the Metropolitan Research Center, Center for Ecological Planning and Design, or Health Aging Resilient Place Lab.
  • Developing and submitting research funding proposals to national agencies and foundations.
  • Participating in faculty governance at the department, college, and university levels.

Required Qualifications
  • A record of research in urban Planning or related field.

Preferred qualifications
  • A doctoral degree in Planning or a related field is preferred
  • Teaching experience at the university level.
  • Peer-reviewed research and grant writing experience.
