Job Description:
Full-Time, Faculty, 9-month Academic position – Political Science Faculty. This is a Full-Time, tenure-track, benefited Faculty position beginning Fall Semester, 2023.

The faculty member will conduct their assignments and co-curricular college activities in a manner consistent with the philosophy and purpose of Aims Community College as stated in the school catalog.
The primary purpose of the faculty member is to teach. The faculty member is also responsible for scholarly and creative activities (professional development), and service to the college. The following list provides detailed expectations for this full-time faculty position:

1. Provide effective and high-quality instruction and assessment.
2. Continually refine and modernize curriculum so that it remains educationally sound and meets the high standards of Aims Community College; develop curriculum as assigned.
3. Teach courses in Political Science. Additionally, full-time faculty are expected to:
  • Collaborate on the creation and oversight of curriculum
  • Support part-time faculty through meetings and answering questions
  • Keep the department chair informed of issues, concerns, and highlights from the classroom
4. Maintain currency in your field of expertise.
5. Use computer technology to enhance student learning.
6. Ensure availability to students by providing opportunities for answering questions and providing support outside of the classroom. This can take the form of formal office hours, phone call availability, synchronous chat, or other such options as long as you make availability clear to students and responsive to their needs.
7. Be available to teach on any campus/outreach site at any scheduled time as assigned. Efforts are made to accommodate faculty preferences, but all faculty must provide flexibility to accommodate students’ scheduling needs as our top priority.
8. Demonstrate an attitude and aptitude that is supportive of the College’s efforts to provide students with a range of course modality options. Teaching assignment may include online, synchronous remote, traditional face-to-face or blended (hybrid) versions of these as determined by student, department and college needs.
9. Provide meaningful participation on college committees or organizations by seeking out areas of interest and being supportive of department and college needs.
10. Actively participate in college efforts to enhance student persistence and retention.
11. Assist in the implementation of institutional, divisional, or department goals as assigned.
12. Initiate and maintain professional relationships with external agencies, business and other educational institutions as assigned.
13. Demonstrate a commitment to the philosophy that each individual should be allowed an opportunity to succeed regardless of past experience.
14. Demonstrate a knowledge of developmental education theory and student development theory, and develop strategies to meet students wherever they are in their knowledge and ability level to help them successfully reach the course outcomes.
15. Demonstrate a willingness to embrace and apply the provisions of Aims Community College’s Mission Statement, Purposes, Philosophy and commitment to Affirmative Action.
16. Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Department Chair or Academic Dean.
 
Teaching:
Interacting with students to provide opportunities to learn, creating conditions that facilitate learning, and using techniques and methods that create a high probability that learning will occur. To achieve such interaction, a teacher must possess three basic abilities:
 
  • Instructional Delivery: those human interactive skills and characteristics that make for clear communication of information, and promote learning through an effective learning environment.
  • Provide effective and high-quality instruction of subject being taught.
  • Apply learning-centered educational practices such as creating and communicating clearly-defined outcomes for student learning.
  • Provide a diverse array of learning activities that directly tie to those defined outcomes.
  • Use assessment data to improve instruction and learning, and participate in an ongoing College-Wide dialogue about teaching and learning.
  • Develop and refine department curriculum as necessary to maintain currency in pedagogy and content
 
Instructional Design Skills:
  • Includes technical skills in designing, sequencing, and presenting experiences which promote student learning, and designing, developing, and implementing tools and procedures and procedures for assessing student-learning.
  • Use and develop appropriate computer-based technologies, including online instruction to promote student learning.
  • Design, develop and implement tools and procedures for assessing student-learning outcomes.
  • Adopt new teaching methodologies as appropriate.
  • Collaborate in the development and implementation of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments of learning for students.
 
Professional Obligations:
  • Implement department, division, and/or institutional goals as assigned.
  • Submits course syllabi and other required documents on time.
  • Manages the classroom facility.
  • Keeps accurate attendance and grade records.
  • Meets other professional obligations as stated in the Faculty Annual Plan and Evaluation.
 
Scholarly & Creative Activities (Professional Development):
Those endeavors related to a faculty member’s teaching assignment that contribute to the discovery, dissemination, and practical application of knowledge and/or skill. The activities that may be required, as appropriate to the faculty member’s teaching assignment, include the following:
  • Attend conferences, workshops, and/or training appropriate to one’s field.
  • Complete coursework related to one’s teaching assignment.
  • Create teaching methodology and instructional design.
  • Other activities that contribute to keeping current in the content field.
 
Service Helping:
Helping the college to meet the goals and objectives of its mission and strategic plan. The activities that may be required, as appropriate to the faculty member’s teaching assignment, include the following:
  • Fulfill College service requirements by making meaningful contributions on campus and/or to community service groups.
  • Participate in institutional and departmental recruitment and retention activities. Assist in the evaluation and selection of textbooks and other resources and materials in one’s assigned area.
  • Serve on department, division, and institutional committees.
  • Assist in program and curriculum review, revision, and the development and assessment of learning.
  • Maintain classrooms and/or labs.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to embrace and apply the provisions of the College’s mission statement, purpose, philosophy and commitment to diversity.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a part/full-time basis.
  • Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Political Science, or a closely related field.
  • Ability to teach using methodologies that support a student-centered learning environment.
  • Computer literacy and the ability to use computer technology in classroom/lab instruction.
  • A willingness to take classes in teaching methods, curriculum development, computer applications or other coursework deemed necessary by the department chair or Academic Dean.
  • A positive attitude toward teaching courses in varied modalities, including online, synchronous remote and traditional face-to-face.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
 
  • Terminal degree in Political Science
  • Experience teaching in Political Science at the college level.
  • Experience teaching and supporting traditionally under-served student populations.
  • A demonstrated aptitude for developing course content and teaching in varied modalities: online, synchronous remote, traditional face-to-face, and blended (hybrid) versions of each.

Minimum Payment Amount:
$47,736.00
 
Employees in these positions may be asked to participate in temporary assignments lasting less than 6 months (such as curriculum development, short term projects, meetings and substitute duties) which could amount to additional temporary pay.
