Instructor of Communications



Location: Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: Provide instruction on basic speech/communication courses at branch campus sites, teach dual enrollment classes on high school campuses in the college service area, and complete administrative duties as assigned.

Essential Job Functions:
Teach introductory speech communication, day and/or evening courses, both on and off branch campus sites. This will also include teaching dual enrollment classes at area high schools in conventional and alternate delivery modes.

Prepare course syllabi, course materials, evaluate student learning and maintain class records.
Complete all duties outlined in Guidelines for Faculty WSCC Policy 06:01:01, which includes but is not limited to, participating in curriculum development, student recruiting, and advising, departmental meetings and college boards and committees.
Assist in budget preparation and management, course scheduling, technology use, completing unit objectives, curriculum modification and outcomes assessment, and equipment purchases.
Maintain an open line of communication with college administration.
Some additional duties may involve assuming the role of Debate Coach teaching COMM 2055 Argumentation and Debate. In addition to; recruiting debaters, coaching debate, hosting an annual debate tournament, and travelling with the Debate Team to various weekend tournaments across the region and state.
Perform other related duties as required.

Leadership & Supervisory: This position may have some supervisory responsibilities, and is expected to participate as part of a team in conjunction with other faculty and as a member of the Humanities division.

Qualifying Job Standards:
Required

Master’s Degree or higher in Communication or a related field or 18 hours of applicable graduate course work in Communication from a regionally accredited institution.
Classroom teaching experience required.
Ability to communicate and develop effective interpersonal relationships
Demonstrated classroom teaching effectiveness

Preferred

One year or more of related teaching experience
Previous debate coaching and/or experience as a college debater

Strong leadership and motivational skills are essential.

Is a team player and contributes to the department and the division with new ideas and approaches, and uses professional development opportunities to expand instructional vision.

Environment & Working Conditions: Office environment is temperature controlled with occasional fluctuations, well lit, and free from loud noises and unnecessary interruptions. Could be exposed to varying weather conditions when travelling.

Physical Demands: (including requirements for travel or working nights/weekends/holidays)

Large amounts of time spent looking at computer monitors could lead to some eye strain, stress, or headache issues.
Operation of standard office equipment including copier and fax machine.
Repetitive stress injuries could occur.
Travel to local areas may be required.
