How to Apply

In order to be considered for a GSI position, 1) applicants must complete the GSI Application Form (Google Form), 2) upload cover letter and cv as a single document to this job posting, and 3) have a recommender send one letter of recommendation to lsa-comm-gsi@umich.edu

Letters of recommendation should not be sent in directly by the applicant.  Have your recommender send an email to lsa-comm-gsi@umich.edu and make sure the title of the email is your name. Appropriate letters of recommendation should come from individuals who can speak toward your ability to be a Graduate Student Instructor, i.e. academic advisors, past instructors, heads of departments, etc.

If this is your first time teaching, you must take the asynchronous online CRLT new GSI orientation.  We will forward you this information after you have been appointed.  You must also attend the Department of Communication and Media’s New GSI Orientation and COMM 993, our departmental pedagogy and instructor training course. 
You must confirm you can attend all of this before an offer is made.

Responsibilities*

Plan and deliver two/three weekly discussion sections; attend all lectures; read all assigned course readings and watch all screenings; grade papers, exams, quizzes, and activities; hold weekly office hours; attend weekly planning meetings with the instructor; assist in the preparation of course materials.

Required Qualifications*

Excellent communication and organizational skills, good reading ability (the readings for this course are long and dense), and demonstrated achievement in higher education. 

Desired Qualifications*

An academic background in the humanities or social sciences. Familiarity and/or interest in the history and theory of communication/media technologies and their relationship to culture, society, and politics. Previous teaching experience, particularly in writing-intensive courses, is strongly preferred.

Decision Making Process

Hiring decisions will be made by the Department of Communication and Media Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and instructing faculty; appointment offers will be finalized by the end of the summer term.

Selection Process

All GSI appointments are subject to administrative approval. The department reserves the right to cancel the appointment due to low overall enrollment figures. Applicants may request information about the status of their application from the program by emailing lsa-comm-gsi@umich.edu.
