New Student Programs at NC State University develops programs for new undergraduate first-year and transfer students, as well as continuing second year students, that help prepare them as they transition into and through college life, as well as the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead—intellectually, emotionally, academically, and socially. Extending into the school year and beyond, New Student Programs aims to provide students support and programming that will push them past their expectations towards a successful college experience.

Essential Job Duties

The Coordinator of New Student Programs creates, plans, and implements on-going transition related programming for students in their first years at NC State. Additionally, they will be providing leadership for university-wide Welcome Weeks initiatives and programs, assisting with the Common Experience, and supporting departmental initiatives, such as New Student and Family Orientation and the Summer Start program.

The Coordinator of New Student Programs is responsible for the following:
  • Creating and implementing year-round initiatives and programs related to the success of first-year and transfer students
  • Providing leadership for the university-wide fall and spring Welcome Weeks, including the coordination of the WWW Planning Committee and planning departmental sponsored events
  • Collaborating with the Director in the creation and implementation of programming focused on second year student engagement and success, including working with the Second Year Experience Committee
  • Planning and implementing a university-wide Common Experience initiative
  • Supporting co-curricular programming opportunities during the Summer Start program
  • Providing on-site supervision to student staff as they assist with event implementation
  • Collaborating with department staff on marketing and communication initiatives (website, social media, etc.) in relation to their programs
  • Assisting in the recruitment, selection, and training of New Student Programs student staff


As a member of the New Student Programs team, each staff member is expected to:
  • Support department and university programming to assist students in their transition and success, such as admitted and confirmed student events, New Student and Family Orientation programs, and the Summer Start program, among others
  • Assist with general office customer service, including phone, email and texting support
  • Engage in a practice of ongoing assessment of programs and initiatives in conjunction with New Student Programs staff
  • Serve as a liaison to campus committees and representing office at regional or national conferences
  • Work some required evenings and weekends with longer hours during peak programming

Minimum Education and Experience

Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Leadership, Organizational Development, Higher Education, Business Administration, or related field or a Bachelor’s degree with two or more years of experience working in higher education

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated use of innovative ideas in leadership development and programming for college students
  • Experience in developing and maintaining effective working relationships with fellow staff members and campus partners
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a highly collaborative team of professionals and student leaders
  • Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, facilitation, and writing skills
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of student development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Education, Leadership, Organizational Development, Higher Education, Business Administration, or related field
  • Experience with the development and implementation of student transition related activities
  • Experience with facilitating conversations around student identity development
