Job Description Summary:
Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Kansas Medical Center are individuals who have received their terminal degree and who have opted to pursue further training in a postdoctoral appointment. Postdoctoral scholarship is a time-limited appointment, the primary purpose of which is to provide research and/or scholarly training for an academic or research career. A postdoctoral scholar at KUMC is expected to: Participate in a full-time regimen of advanced training and research, train under the supervision of a faculty research mentor who will provide the opportunity for collaborative and independent research, as well promote publication of findings and preparation of research grants as determined by a mutual agreement between the postdoctoral scholar and the mentor, participate in relevant academic activities related to the preparation for a career in research or academia, participate in the University’s Individual Development Plan policy for postdoctoral scholars, have a PhD or equivalent terminal degree (such as MD or PharmD), and candidates should have strong English skills and demonstrate an ability to write and communicate with a scientific audience. Candidates must be able to independently plan, multi-task and complete projects. Ideally, the fellow will be expected to design and execute experiments, analyze data, write and prepare independent grant applications and manuscripts for scientific publications, and supervise graduate students.
Job Description:

Seeking a highly self-motivated, hardworking postdoctoral candidate with molecular, cell biology, biochemistry and/or vascular biology experience to work in the laboratory at the University of Kansas Medical Center, focused on unraveling the molecular mechanisms involved in aging, particularly in the context of interventions including exercise and nutritional supplementation.  Primary research efforts of the lab are aimed at understanding functional and cognitive capacity in both natural and accelerated aging mouse models.  Current research is aimed at elucidating the role of non-coding RNAs, autophagy/mitophagy, mitochondria, and the immune system underlying age associated declines such as frailty, sarcopenia, and dementia.

Candidate with a strong background in molecular biology, animal models, and prior experience with studies on muscle or brain will be preferred. Competence in areas of critical thinking, cell culture/technical skills and written/communication skills in English, with prior publication record and ability to work independently as well as part of team is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Recent PhD in biochemistry, immunology, cell biology or a related field.
  • Work Experience: A record of creativity and scientific productivity. Proficiency in molecular biology and protein biochemistry techniques is essential.
  • Skills: Experience with cellular immunology, transgenic mouse handling, single cell sequencing, flow cytometry or bioinformatics is desirable.

Job Duties Outlined:

  • Perform experiments to understand strategies to enhance healthspan (optimal physical and cognitive function) during aging and investigate the underlying biology driving phenotypes. Experiments will involve animal models, behavioral tests, culturing of primary cell lines, protein and nucleic acid isolation, NEXTgen sequencing, western blot, ELISA, and Seahorse extracellular flux analysis.
  • Perform experiments in naturally aged and/or transgenic mouse models that investigate aging-associated genes.
  • Participate in the preparation of scientific manuscripts and grant proposals.
  • Design independent experiments in consultation with supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Documents:

  • Resume/CV
  • Cover Letter
