Position Summary
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Assistant Professor (Senior Research) position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
This College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) Assistant Professor (Senior Research) position is part of the Geology and Geophysics discipline group. This position would use uranium-series and isotope geochemistry to further understanding of geochronology of the geologic record, advancing program goals related to environmental geochronology, building on existing CEOAS strengths in trace element geochemistry multicollector plasma mass spectrometry.
This CEOAS Assistant Professor (Senior Research) position will establish and maintain a program of research supporting timely promotion in rank, and offer significant contributions to the field and continued external funding of an appropriate research program. The incumbent works toward distinction in research as evidenced by national recognition. Research activities are expected to result in publications advancing knowledge and understanding of the earth, ocean, and atmospheric sciences.
An Assistant Professor (Senior Research) may advise students. They also may teach as the need arises and with approval from the Dean. Other duties may be assigned by the Dean to meet the needs of the College, within the framework of fractional effort.

Position Duties
90% – Sponsored Research:
  • Conducts externally-funded research that includes analytical geochemistry and mass spectrometry in a laboratory setting.
  • Working in a research team including co-investigators, research staff, students, and others.
  • Sample collection on land or at sea.
  • Disseminates project results via departmental seminars, national and international meetings, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Management of research may include supervision of grant funded personnel including: hiring; providing leadership, supervising and directing; planning, assigning and reviewing work; mentoring and establishing goals; disciplining or effectively recommending discipline, up to and including dismissal; and addressing and responding to grievances, developing a framework for corrective actions as necessary.

5% – Grant Writing and Publications:
  • Researches and writes proposals resulting in external funding.
  • Submits research proposals to federal funding agencies and other sources for salary and expenses for travel, computers and research equipment.
  • Manages external funding resulting from approved grant proposals.

5% – Service:
  • Engages in service to the disciplinary group, the college, the university, and the profession.
  • Makes contributions to educational equity, a multicultural setting, and the advancement of diverse groups and diverse perspectives.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Earth Sciences or related discipline by the start of employment.
  • Research experience and evidence of publication in peer-reviewed journals of original research related to isotope geochemistry, uranium series geochronology, and paleoclimatology.
  • Proven record of successful applications for grant funding.
  • Documented laboratory experience related to column chemistry and the use of clean laboratory facilities.
  • Research experience related to high-precision uranium series dating of carbonates.
  • A commitment to educational equity in a multicultural setting and to advancing the participation of diverse groups and supporting diverse perspectives.
  • Strong scholarly potential that is demonstrated by a record of peer reviewed publications and a clearly defined research agenda.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Completion of at least one postdoctoral fellowship.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Experience leading field research campaigns and sample collection.
  • Experience with technical instrumentation such as mass spectrometers.
  • Experience in uranium series method development.
  • Experience working with paleo-archives, such as ice cores and speleothems.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • The position may require travel to present research results or advance research program. The position may require working in laboratory environments, in the field, and/or at sea, as dictated by research.
  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals in a clean laboratory environment such as fume hoods.
