Job Description

Requisition Id 10297

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a highly qualified candidates for a postdoctoral position in the Neutron and X-ray Scattering Group (NXSG). The position will support science programs funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES). The successful candidates will be expected to work effectively under general supervision with NXSG scientists at neutron national user facilities such as the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) (http://www.ornl.gov/user-facilities/sns ) and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) (http://neutrons.ornl.gov/facilities/HFIR/). The general scientific focus will be on using neutron measurements of the structure and dynamics of functional and energy materials. One position will focus on understanding how hybridized atomic vibrations control energy transport and functionalities, the other position will focus on thermal transport in nuclear materials. The candidate will work in close collaboration with Dr. Raphaël Hermann and Dr. Michael Manley, respectively and in collaboration with other groups within the BES MSED program and the TETI Energy Frontier Research Center.

This position resides in the Neutron and X-Ray Scattering Group (NXSG), FMS Section, Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD), at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct primarily neutron scattering experiments and possibly resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and Mössbauer spectral experiments (e.g., lattice dynamics, crystal structure, disorder and thermal diffuse scattering, data analysis, and some modeling).
  • Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity; the job holder will interact regularly with senior scientists, program managers, and group members.
  • Be responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
