Position Primary Purpose
Are you a marketing, publicity, or communications professional interested in joining an
innovative, collaborative, and hard-working team and helping to help connect readers with
books and authors that can make a difference?

The Marketing and Publicity Program Manager oversees the development and implementation
of a comprehensive marketing and publicity strategy for the University of Notre Dame Press’s
books and authors. Reporting to the Assistant Director of the Press, this position develops
strategies that integrate print, digital, social, and media relations initiatives to meet annual
revenue goals and to enhance the reach and reputation of Notre Dame Press. The Marketing
and Publicity Program Manager is a key leader on the Press’s team, collaborating across
departments to expand the impact of books and authors.

political science, Latin American studies, and other areas that align with the academic strengths

The University of Notre Dame Press operates on a hybrid work schedule. Since the Marketing
and Publicity Program Manager organizes and leads local events, candidates with a willingness
to be located in the South Bend area is preferred.

Principle Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Working closely with Press leadership, develops promotional strategies to enhance the reputation of the Press and operates as the Press’s communications liaison
  • Crafts and implements comprehensive marketing and publicity strategies for 50–60 new trade (general interest) and academic titles each year
  • Writes and edits persuasive promotional copy for books, including descriptive copy and metadata, press releases, book pitches, and other written materials
  • Regularly evaluates the impact of marketing and publicity efforts, including remaining up to date on marketing and publicity innovations and best practices
  • Operates as a key advisor on publishing decisions, including cover design and book packaging, marketing priorities, and the evaluation of the impact of published books
  • Serves as the primary author contact for marketing and publicity efforts
  • In close coordination with authors, facilitates and promotes key events throughout the year, including book launches and readings, independent bookstore events, and virtual and in-person book symposia
  • Manages a robust media relations plan in support of the Press’s goals, including building strong relationships with international, national, and local media outlets; scholarly journals; and the Notre Dame media relations team
  • Tracks and reports on Press and book mentions in media, reviews, op-eds, interviews, and on social media
  • With the marketing and sales specialist, ensures thorough social media and website coverage of author events, media hits, and other book coverage

Minimum Qualifications

? Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
? 5 years of relevant marketing, publicity, or communications experience at a publisher,
university, or non-profit
? Demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives
? Superior written and verbal communications skills
? Demonstrated ability to balance competing demands and deadlines
? Team-player who sees the well-being of the press team as integral to their own success
? Experience establishing, building, and managing relationships with internal and external
stakeholders at all levels
? Strong technical skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace,
social media tools and strategies, and a willingness to learn other programs as needed
? Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 years of experience in book marketing with a university press or trade book publisher
  • Established relationships with media outlets relevant to academic book publishing
  • Familiarity with WordPress or other website management platforms, MailChimp or other email marketing platforms, Google Analytics, graphic software like Adobe Creative
  • Suite or Canva, publicity databases like Cision or Agility, book metadata best practices, and Edelweiss
