Position Highlights The School of Landscape Architecture and Planning is in search of a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with the Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) program, funded by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The primary research focus for this Postdoctoral Research Associate is interdisciplinary climate change resilience research, with a focus on bridging science and decision-making in rural contexts. Candidates with experience in climate change resilience research and an interest in heat research in rural, tribal, and border communities are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will work together as a cohort with interdisciplinary researchers, decision-makers, and community members across the Southwest on research that advances equitable decision-making to improve climate change resilience. This is a year to year appointment, full-time, with renewal for up to three more years contingent on funding and performance.

The Climate Assessment for the Southwest (CLIMAS) program was established in 1998 as part of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments program. CLIMAS is a collaboration between University of Arizona and New Mexico State University. The CLIMAS team has experts from a variety of social, physical, and natural sciences working with partners across the Southwest to develop sustainable answers to regional climate challenges.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct collaborative and independent research on climate change resilience in the Southwest.
  • Collaborate with the PI and research team, including supporting and potentially leading manuscripts and proposals.
  • Represent the research team at workshops, conferences, and forums.
  • Conduct tasks as directed by the principal investigator.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary research team.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral, written, analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated expertise in climate change resilience.
  • Demonstrated interest or expertise in heat-related research areas such as field data collection, mapping, public health outcomes, and/or policy and governance.
  • Demonstrated interest in working with rural, tribal, and border communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research, including executing research objectives, paper publication, and proposal development.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must hold or be conferred a doctoral degree in geography, urban planning, public policy, public health, environmental sciences, or in a related field as applicable upon hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience in working with non-academic partners, including community stakeholders.
