Job Description Summary:

A Provost’s Dual Credit Teaching Fellow will have the opportunity to build their understanding of the community college mission and the role community colleges play as a catalyst for changing students’ lives. The community college mission includes offering college credit classes to college–ready high school students on high school campuses. Dual Credit Teaching Fellows will build their skills in establishing an engaging teaching and learning classroom environment for diverse learners in various high school settings. These Faculty will have the support of dedicated faculty mentors, faculty affinity groups, and robust professional development opportunities.

Responsible for preparing and delivering History coursework in engaging, innovative, and discipline-appropriate ways that reflect a commitment to success equity, respect for diversity, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and knowledge of the teaching field. Meets professional standards for faculty in accordance with college policies and procedures.

Job Description:

The History department offers college credit courses across ACC's campuses, online and offers dual enrollment college credit courses for area high school students seeking both high school and college credit. The department is dedicated to the use of curriculum that is responsive to the students it serves. This position will primarily support the teaching of our high school students within our Dual Credit program. The primary courses taught are HIST 1301 and 1302, along with collaborative courses that support our Mexican-American studies and the African -American Culture Center to increase the understanding of culture, history and contributions within the Central Texas communities.
 

A Provost’s Dual Credit Teaching Fellow will have the opportunity to develop new skills while putting learning into practice as being responsible for all aspects of their course(s) and participating as an active member of the faculty community within their discipline and at the college. ACC is seeking diverse applicants with less than five years teaching experience in higher education who are interested in acquiring teaching experience at a community college. A Teaching Fellow will have the opportunity to develop new skills while putting learning into practice.

NOTE:  Position is for one full academic year (12 months), and can be renewed for up to two subsequent years based on annual performance evaluations.  

Position includes teaching 12 semester credit hours each Fall and Spring semester and 6 semester credit hours in the summer.  The teaching will be in Dual Credit courses at area high schools. Fellowship also includes professional development, mentoring, engagement with the department’s dual credit liaison(s), and participating in assigned work supporting the department’s strategic initiatives.

If the Fellowship is renewed for the second year, Fellows will participate in ACC’s year-long Teaching and Learning Academy.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties

  • Prepare and teach courses in the field of History to a diverse and multicultural student population based on the department's approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of community college students and the standards of the discipline.

  • Participate in ACC’s year-long onboarding for new faculty in the first year.  If the Fellowship is renewed, the second year will include participation in a year-long Teaching & Learning Academy.

  • Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.

  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.

  • Participate in mentoring and affinity groups established for the Teaching Fellows program.

  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.

  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.

  • Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.

  • Serve on departmental committees or work groups as requested.

  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice chancellor, vice chancellor, executive vice chancellor.

Technology

  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom. Demonstrated proficiency using an online learning management system such as Blackboard to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.).


Principal Professional Standards

  • Appropriate use of the college's learning management system.

  • Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.

  • Participate in graduation, general assembly, and other official college functions.

  • Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.

  • Attend and participate in collegewide, campus, department, or other activities and meetings.

  • Recognize and reflect standards of civility and collegiality in all interactions.

  • Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.

Required Education

In accordance with Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements:

  • Master’s degree in History or American Civilization (with cross-listed courses in history), or

  • Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in history

SACSCOC requirements may differ depending on the courses taught within the discipline.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to maintain an established schedule, including evenings and weekends, including possible multiple campus locations that may vary by semester.
