Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Library Technician I, for the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Services (RBHS) Health Sciences Libraries Department at Rutgers University Libraries. Under the direction of the Head of Access Services, the Library Technician I performs a wide range of duties, both technical and service oriented, in the Circulation Department. Maintains the library’s collections and provides services, information, guidance, and assistance to library users.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Maintains a sound knowledge of all Alma Fulfillment functions, including user management, return items, scan in items, pick from shelf, and course reserves.

a. Performs automated collection retrieval from Alma, monitors and keeps up with queues, prepares material for pick-up by requesters.
b. Performs all steps as instructed for Personal Delivery from Alma, confirms requesters’ home address for personal delivery, prepares for UPS delivery, contacts UPS when needed.
  • Scans articles and chapters for digitization services, sends via electronic means digitized material to users.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the library’s opening and closing procedures for both Circulation and overall library building perspective.
  • Collects and records gate counts on a daily basis. Enters statistics in LibInsight. Performs other library usage data gathering as assigned.
  • Participates in the creation and updating of Smith Library Circulation Service and Operation LibGuide, and the Circulation Procedure and Policy LibGuide.
  • Conducts mail services. Checks mail receipt and delivery on a daily basis. Follows up with RBHS Mail Room and UPS as needed to ensure the on-time delivery and receipt of library mail and packages.
  • Participates in collections-related projects including the Smith Library monograph collection, reserve collection, and journal collection. Performs re-shelving, and shelf -reading as required. Participates in collection weeding projects as assigned.
  • Supervises, trains and monitors the work of part-time staff and work-study students.
  • Assists patrons in locating books and other library materials.
  • Instructs library patrons in the use of library equipment (copier, scanner, and printers).
  • Maintains supply for photocopiers and printers (paper, toner and cartridge).
  • Staffs the Circulation Desk during hours of operation, charging and discharging materials from Alma system. Answers telephone inquiries, provides information as needed, and refers calls to appropriate personnel.
  • Maintains familiarity with Circulation policies and procedures across user eligibility categories.
  • Follows Circulation financial handling procedures, collects lost books payment and copy card purchasing payment, issues receipts.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Must be able to lift boxes of print materials up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to push library materials on book trucks throughout the library.
Special Conditions
Work Hours: Monday to Thursday 3:30pm to 11pm and Friday 2:30pm to 10pm.

Immunization Requirements
