Job Description

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Building Technology and Urban Systems Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Scholar to join the team.

In this exciting role you will conduct research related to industrial carbon mitigation technologies, policies, and programs. The industry sector accounted for more than one-third of global emissions and it is one of the hardest-to-abate sectors. Heavy industries, such as steel, cement, and petrochemical industries play a critical role in the energy transition. Significant technology advancement, modeling and analysis, and policy work is needed to support a clean and robust industrial sector.

You will conduct research projects related to reducing embodied emissions of key building materials, such as cement, steel, glass, and aluminum; develop carbon-mitigation pathways for petrochemical industries.

What You Will Do:

  • Perform research and analyses in the areas of industrial sector energy use, carbon-mitigation technologies and measures, decarbonization policies and programs, and related greenhouse gas emissions for a variety of manufacturing industries.
  • Design databases and engineering-based spreadsheet tools for quantifying and analyzing energy use, energy and emission benchmarks, and greenhouse gas emissions in key manufacturing industries and other analytical needs.
  • Conduct techno-economic analysis on decarbonization technologies and measures.
  • Contribute to and or author conference papers, laboratory reports and refereed journal articles on industrial energy use and industrial decarbonization topics.

Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • Develop and/or assist in developing presentations for conferences, meetings and workshops, and give presentations at conferences, meetings and workshops.

What is Required:

  • A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, energy engineering, energy and resources, environmental engineering, energy policy, or a related field is required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of industrial energy uses and demand, as well as technical analyses.  Expertise in industrial energy-efficiency and decarbonization measures and technologies.
  • Familiarity with underlying factors affecting energy use in various manufacturing industries, including a strong understanding of the physical science, engineering, and manufacturing considerations that affect energy use. Experience with quantitative data analysis.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills as lead or co-author of technical papers and reports. Proficiency developing presentations, presenting research results and representing the group at meetings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Advanced mastery of Excel, proficiency with Word, PowerPoint, and Access. Proven technical writing and editing skills and ability to prepare materials and write sections of reports. Familiarity with web-based research.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ability to use and/or develop thermal energy modeling tools and software.

For Consideration, please apply by March 24, 2023 with the following application materials:
