Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Department of Biology and Marine Biology at University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar to begin Spring 2023.
This is a 1-year term appointment with opportunity for renewal at 1-year intervals, contingent on the availability of funding through June 2026. A UNCW postdoctoral scholar is a 12-month full-time temporary non-faculty position.
Funding for this opportunity is through an NSF-BSF collaborative grant: Interbacterial and environmental signaling impacts on Vibrio coralliilyticus pathogenesis of coral. This position will focus on the environmental and molecular signals associated with regulating virulence and interbacterial interactions between this pathogen and the host microflora. This collaborative effort will include the use of metatranscriptomics, proteomics, molecular cloning, mutagenesis, and live host infection experiments.
The primary responsibility of the Postdoctoral Researcher position will focus on molecular cloning, mutagenesis, and infection experiments in the lab.
The UNCW postdoctoral scholar will:
  • Have a primary faculty mentor.
  • Develop an Individual Development Plan (IDP) in coordination with their faculty mentor.
  • Participate in professional development programming offered through the University.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or related field conferred before the appointment start date but no more than five (5) years prior to the appointment start date.
  • Experience working in a microbiology laboratory and knowledge of common protocols, aseptic technique, and safety measures.
  • High level of proficiency in molecular cloning and bacterial mutagenesis.
  • Proficiency in writing primary research articles, and reports, and giving presentations in English.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Able to design and run qPCR assays.
  • Experience with DNA/RNA extractions from complex environmental samples.
  • Experience working with Vibrio strains and/or marine microorganisms.
  • Experience with virulence assays and utilizing Koch’s Molecular postulates to define mechanisms.
  • Experience working with microalgal cultures; cultivation and experimentation.

The Department of Biology & Marine Biology at UNCW offers exciting, student-oriented programs that award Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BS), Master of Science (MS), and Doctoral (PhD) degrees.
