Post Doctoral Research Associate

AURA/NSO

Job Description

The National Solar Observatory invites applications for a postdoctoral position located at the Maui, HI location, in close proximity to the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope. The successful candidate is expected to engage in collaborative research on the solar corona, with a particular focus on observational analysis that uses and/or enhances DKIST data. Candidates with relevant experience and interest in coronal observations, coronal modeling, multi-messenger heliophysics, and/or spectropolarimetric instrumentation are encouraged to apply.

Maui-based NSO science staff work closely with the NSO colleagues in Boulder as well as scientists from the neighboring University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy. Research at NSO includes observational, computational, and theoretical aspects of photospheric, chromospheric, and coronal plasmas and the development of new instrumentation. Current research topics of the science staff include atomic and molecular line formation and interpretation, polarized radiation and scattering processes, MHD wave and shock dynamics, coronal rain, magnetic topology, and active region evolution.

Application Instructions:

Please submit the following via the online system:

  • Online application form
  • A cover letter describing your interest in this position and your relevant
  • CV/Resume containing a list of publications
  • Research statement including a report on research activities to date and/or proposals for future research. The suggested length is 2 to 4 pages.
  • Names of three professional references

Application Deadline: March 27, 2023

Essential Functions:

This position will include research in one or several of the following subfields, or as independently proposed by the candidate:

  • Developing methods to extract plasma diagnostics from DKIST coronal observations, potentially including radiative coronal modeling and/or other data analysis techniques.
  • Advancing multi-messenger heliophysics science through the use of DKIST data and other coordinated data sources, both space and ground-based.
  • The study of coronal wave propagation and coronal magnetic fields using DKIST.
  • Coupling DKIST observational constraints to global coronal magnetic field modeling efforts.
  • Development of new coronal instrument modes including hardware implementation, data validation, and initial science verification.
  • Application and development of tomographic inversion methods for coronal analysis with DKIST.
  • Other, as proposed.

In addition to research, the position will include a component of operational support for the DKIST facility (not to exceed 20% of the time).

Duration:

The position is for the duration of 2 years with the possibility of extension for an additional year contingent on the availability of funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in physics, astronomy, or a related field. Ph.D. must be completed by September 2023.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming with Python, IDL, or comparable software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A background in solar or heliophysics research with an established record of scientific publications.
  • Experience in the analysis and/or calibration of spectropolarimetric data, and knowledge of forward or inverse modeling tools to interpret polarized spectra.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Self-motivated and goal-oriented.
  • Willingness and/or relevant experience to participate in or lead the definition of science use cases for DKIST observing proposals.
  • Proficient communication skills within a research environment.

Physical Demands:

  • The functions of this position are mostly carried out in an office environment near sea level. Occasional work at high elevations (Haleakala, 3000m) may be required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

AURA offers an excellent benefits package including paid time off and retirement plan contributions, competitive salary commensurate with experience, and a very attractive work environment.

Details on benefits can be found at https://hr.aura-astronomy.org/employee-benefits-guide/

COVID-19 Policy Update: AURA has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy that requires all employees to be vaccinated including being up to date on boosters, unless qualified for an exemption based on medical or religious reasons.  All new employees will be required to comply with this policy and will be required to present proof of full vaccination or submit a completed request (including supporting documents, if applicable) for an exemption at least five (5) business days prior to their start of employment.  Individuals who fail to meet this deadline may have their employment start date delayed.

This is a requirement for all employees working onsite or from home (telework or hybrid remote work schedule).  Currently the vaccination requirement does not apply to any future AURA employees working in Chile, regardless of their nationality or type of contract.
