The Position

The College seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member in Career Counseling. The ideal candidate will share the College’s commitment to educating a racially and socioeconomically diverse student population.

This position reports to the Dean of Counseling, Advising, & Matriculation. The duties of this counselor will cover the full range of general counseling responsibilities including academic, career and personal counseling with both individuals and groups and teaching discipline-specific courses.

Start date of this assignment: Fall 2023.

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position.   1. Provide individual and group career counseling services
  2. Guide students through the career exploration and decision-making processes and assist them in setting goals to address major and/or career uncertainty
  3. Evaluate how a student understands their personal experiences and/or challenges in relation to their personal, educational and/or career goals
  4. Guide students through the examination of personal characteristics, including abilities, skills, interests, personal traits, aptitudes, values, in considering their major and/or career choices
  5. Administer and interpret career assessment results to support students in their major and career decisions
  6. Assist students in assessing, planning and implementing their short-term and long-term educational and career goals
  7. Guide students in understanding how they can use the current and relevant labor market in their career decision making
  8. Use career information, resources, and technology including labor market information to help guide students in determining major and career
  9. Design and deliver group presentations, workshops and orientations for students, faculty, and community groups on career related topics
  10. Provide leadership in the development, planning, implementation, and management of comprehensive career development programs that align with the college Educational Master Plan
  11. Provide counseling and programing support for Guided Pathways and Learning Communities and signature programs such as Promise, TRIO and EOPS
  12. Leverage technology for tracking, engagement and completion of programmatic outcomes in order to make culturally competent data driven decisions
  13. Build out Canvas communications to create awareness of the Explorers Program and drive engagement
  14. Develop, teach and modify career courses such as Life and Career Planning, Deciding on a Major, or Special Topics in Career
  15. Participate with counseling colleagues to develop and assess student and program learning outcomes. Use the results to improve teaching, learning and engagement
  16. Organize and facilitate career events such as career nights, panel discussions, film screenings, and interviews
  17. Identify and keep current with emerging trends and content relevant to career exploration
  18. Post/share career events in online, social forums (primarily LinkedIn)
  19. Serve as the career liaison for the high school outreach program
  20. Participate in divisional and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities
  21. Participate in professional development activities that support continued development of best career practices
  22. Assist students in assessing, planning and implementing their short-term and long-term educational and career goals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a Master’s or above in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy, or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent (see below) (NOTE: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline).
  • Two or more years of college counseling experience
  • Two or more years college career counseling and assessment experience
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity minded-practice both within and outside of the classroom

Degree Equivalence
The applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different.

Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master’s Degree is not generally expected or available. The applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units of coursework in the academic field and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i) a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree, and

ii) a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by course work required for the degree major.

Professional Achievement Equivalence
The applicant must have completed the General Education requirements for that degree and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that his/her preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The screening committee will select for interview candidates from among those applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum requirements, give evidence of any or all of the following:
  1. Demonstrated experience as a career counseling practitioner with skill in assisting students in examining their interest, abilities, skills, aptitudes, personality and values
  2. Demonstrated experience in helping students discover, reflect, and integrate what they have learned about themselves to make a major and/or career decision
  3. Experience in helping students develop and cultivate social capital as an avenue to building career knowledge, experiences, and opportunities
  4. Knowledge of career development and career decision making processes
  5. Knowledge of career related resources
  6. Knowledge of career development theories that help students understand themselves, how they relate to the world of work and their place in it, including their limitations
  7. Experience in guiding students through the major and career exploration process and connecting to their academic goals
  8. Experience in selecting, analyzing and interpreting appropriate career psychometric assessments and interventions to assist students in making major and career decisions
  9. Knowledge of social-cultural influences that impact marginalized students in the career decision making process
  10. Experience working with adult and non-traditional students, as well as those managing the career transition process
  11. Demonstrate a broad understanding of 21st century majors and careers to help guide students’ major and career choices
  12. Experience in teaching college success and career and personal development courses
  13. Experience in developing curriculum and programming that supports students at all stages of the career development process
  14. Experience developing and coordinating innovative programs that strengthen the quality of counseling services to students
  15. Ability to demonstrate strength in interpersonal communication
  16. Strong oral, written and communication skills with experience in effectively networking with faculty, staff, administrators and employers
  17. Ability to function effectively in a culturally diverse environment and establish relationships and partnerships with faculty, staff, and students
  18. Commitment to professional responsibilities outside of the classroom through enthusiastic contributions to department, division and college activities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (3) years of experience counseling students in a higher education setting
  • Certified to administer and interpret career assessments (i.e., Strong Interest Inventory, MBTI)
  • Experience and skill with addressing equity gaps in the counseling space, instructional, classroom and on campus wide initiatives to ensure policies and practices support student success
  • Experience and expertise in culturally-responsive pedagogy in college success and career and personal development
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s counseling, instructional, classroom, and relational, practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized and other disproportionately impacted students

Faculty Benefits
