Postdoctoral Research Associate

Job Description

In Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Mechanical Engineering (MechE), our faculty members, researchers, and students are revolutionizing focus areas in sophisticated manufacturing, bioengineering, computational engineering, energy and the environment, product design, and robotics. In addition, they are using their expertise in interdisciplinary research centers across the university.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Jon Malen Lab in MechE. In this role, you will carry out advanced independent and/or advised research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, or subject area and may involve coordinating and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. You will acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of your choosing. You will be responsible for work on process monitoring of metals additive manufacturing processes. You will lead a collaborative project developing advanced high speed thermal imaging techniques to monitor melt pool temperature distributions, plume behavior, and spatter formation in laser powder bed fusion, electron beam melting, and directed energy deposition processes. Through the collaboration efforts, your work will advance these thermal imaging methods by adding concurrent imaging based on reflection of incident illumination.

Computational fluid dynamic modeling will be used to understand heat transfer processes in the melt pool. Images will be taken across the various combinations of power, velocity, and geometry especially for combinations known to cause defects that limit the performance of additively manufactured parts. Machine learning tools, trained by the images will identify features in the images that indicate defect formation so that the imaging techniques can be used to certify parts.

The Malen Lab leverages ultrafast laser techniques, micro/nanofabrication, and thermal imaging approaches to measure thermal properties and processes. Recent projects are related to thermal management in high-powered electronics (e.g. GaN and Ga2O3), thermal imaging in advanced manufacturing processes, evaporative cooling in nanoscale menisci, and phonon transport in organic-inorganic materials (e.g. superatomic crystals, organic perovskites, liquid metal composites).

Core responsibilities include:

  • Add illumination based imaging to the thermal imaging capability

  • Model Thermal and solidification processes in AM

  • Use ML to improve process monitoring based on imaging techniques

  • Use thermal imaging approaches to define thermophysical properties of AM metals

Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering is required.

Requirements:

  • Experience with additive manufacturing, computational modelling of additive manufacturing processes, and/or machine learning techniques is required.

  • Research experience in Additive Manufacturing is required.
