Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Assistant Director Biosafety/Biosafety Officer (AD BSO) is an essential position for the University. The AD BSO is responsible for directing a team of three biosafety professionals who develop and implement a comprehensive biological safety program at the University of Maryland and areas under its control. This position serves as the University’s Responsible Official for the Federal Select Agent Program. Serving as the University’s subject matter expert in biosafety, the AD BSO maintains awareness and proficiency in areas of emerging risks and provides a strategic direction for the program. The AD BSO coaches and mentors unit staff who administer the Institutional Biosafety Committee, conduct training, perform post approval monitoring and inspections of authorized spaces, investigate incidents, and develop guidance, tools, and procedures. The AD BSO develops effective partnerships with campus leaders, stakeholders, and external agencies to ensure effective programs are in place to support the University’s mission. With the Department of Environmental Safety, Sustainability and Risk (ESSR) leadership, the AD BSO identifies and implements initiatives to strengthen the biosafety program and the overall safety culture across campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and ten (10) years comprehensive biosafety work experience. 
OR
  • Masters degree and eight (8) years comprehensive biosafety experience 
OR
  • Doctorate degree and six (6) years comprehensive biosafety experience.

Experience supervising professional staff.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Proven working knowledge of biosafety principles, policies, and procedures including NIH,USDA, and CDC guidelines.
  • Experience in applying and interpreting applicable local, state, and federal regulations and related standards and guidelines.
  • Excellent written, verbal, group presentation, and interpersonal communication skills with a wide variety of individuals from the research and support community.

Other Required Qualifications:
  • Meets security clearance requirements of the Federal Select Agents and Toxins regulation.
  • Able to pass a physical examination to allow for emergency response and wearing of respiratory protection and other personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Possesses a valid driver’s license.

Preferences:

Preferences:
  • Masters or Doctorate degree in biological sciences with an emphasis in microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, virology, or related discipline.
  • Professional biosafety experience in an academic setting.
  • Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) designation through American Biological Safety Association International or Registered Biological Safety Professional (RBP).
  • Experience conducting academic bioscience bench research.
  • Experience as a Responsible Official (RO) or Alternate RO in the Select Agent program.
  • Experience working in an A/BSL-3 laboratory.

Physical Demands

Must be capable of working in temperature extremes and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized.

Must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection.

Must be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to twenty pounds.

Will be required to occasionally work off-hours and be subject to on-call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents occurring at the University or affecting University personnel.
