Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Instructor position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
This position focuses on e- campus undergraduate instruction of General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. This position was created to meet growing e-campus demand and will teach e-campus general chemistry and organic chemistry in an asynchronous online environment without live class meetings. Oregon State University (OSU) is a recognized leader in chemistry e-campus (on-line) instruction. A master’s in science (MS) degree in Chemistry or closely required field is required. Prior on-line teaching experience and ability to develop new e-campus laboratory experiments are preferred. Relocation is optional and opportunities exist for on-campus instruction as well.
The primary mission of the OSU Department of Chemistry is to provide a program of undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral education in chemistry and to conduct research and scholarly activities focused on areas of chemistry important to human health, materials and the environment. The department offers BS, MS and PhD degrees in Chemistry and has a rapidly growing student body, including approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 3000 non-majors each year. The College of Science provides a core instructional role at OSU, supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university. The College embraces instruction and research in disciplines ranging from the physical, mathematical, statistical sciences to the life sciences that are based in unbiased inquiry and a dedication to discovery and innovation. Position Duties

90% Teaching, Advising, and Other Assignments:
  • This is a typical breakdown of tasks, however, faculty focus and percentages may vary. Faculty are expected to teach the equivalent of 8 courses (9-month appointment), or 10 courses (12- month appointment).
  • 70% Teach assigned courses:
    • Prepare and deliver course, interact with students, supervise TAs, grade HW and assessments, develop and maintain the course website, hold regular office hours, curricular development, incorporate content connecting to societal impact.
  • 10% Advise or mentor students with focus on career preparation and success:
  • 10% Scholarship and professional development: may include the following:
    • Lead or participate in seminars, workshops and other training events.
    • Serve and actively engage on student committees.
    • Develop or contribute to instructional materials or resources.
    • Publish/disseminate work on evidence-based instruction in the department, OSU or broader community.

10% Service: May include the following:
  • Participate on departmental, college and university committees.
  • Outreach
  • Professional service activities such as committee or leadership role in professional associations/societies.
  • Serve on research, advisory or review panels.
  • Review journal manuscripts, research proposals or external course materials.
  • Organize or chair conferences or conference sessions.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • M.S. in Chemistry or an allied discipline.
  • Evidence of knowledge of organic chemistry.
  • Demonstrated achievement in or significant potential for teaching excellence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Tolerance for diverse ideas within the academy, including those different from one’s own. Commitment to free inquiry based on evidence and criticism.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in chemistry or allied discipline.
  • Prior on-line teaching experience.
  • Ability to develop new e-campus laboratory experiments.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Work schedule may vary depending on courses assigned and needs of the students.
  • Work remotely as agreed upon with supervisor.
