Summary

The Rahman Laboratory at the Research Program on Cognition and Neuromodulation-based Interventions (RP-CNBI) is looking for a full-time Research Counselor (Research Area Specialist Intermediate or Research Area Specialist Associate). The RP-CNBI’s mission is to provide non- pharmacological treatments for persons with neurologic injury and disease. We focus on methods to assist older adults with a variety of cognitive impairments, using neuropsychological theory, modern neuroimaging methods and a range of non-pharmacological treatments, such as cognitive rehabilitation and brain stimulation. Dr. Rahman’s laboratory focuses on Alzheimer’s disease biomarker disclosure – how we give patients and their families feedback about their PET, genetic, and plasma biomarker results, and how that impacts health trajectories over time. The laboratory also focuses heavily on addressing racial-ethnic disparities in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, as well as culturally-informed clinical and research practices.

Responsibilities*

The candidate will perform a range of tasks to support multiple research projects.  Primary roles include completing participant screening and education around biomarker disclosure, providing biomarker results and post-disclosure health education, assisting with safety screening (i.e., screening of mental health following disclosure) and providing supportive resources to enrolled participants and their families. You will also be asked to participate in and, should you wish, lead community engagement efforts in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and surrounding communities. To a lesser extent, you will handle scientific administration and clerical activities as directed to support the Research Program, including coordinating with other researchers throughout the health system. These may also involve 1) recruitment of new participants; 2) enrollment and the informed consent process 3) completion of study visits 4) data entry. Supervision will be provided by a licensed clinical psychologist (Dr. Rahman). Professional development activities and supervision will also be emphasized.

Required Qualifications*

All Applicants must have: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or a similar field. 
  • Clinical license or limited license (supervision of social work or psychology available). License is strongly preferred as the tasks being completed require an additional level of skill and professional knowledge, as well as the ability to complete brief mental health risk evaluations. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills 
  • Ability to multitask and work well under time constraints and deadlines 
  • Ability to work in a semi-independent manner with minimal supervision 
  • Ability to work with diverse teams of people in a diplomatic, collaborative and effective manner
  • Outstanding organizational and record-keeping skills with meticulous attention to detail 
  • Strong technological skills 
  • Ability to problem-solve and establish timelines and priorities 
  • Flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends as necessary to support the program 
  • Excellent driving record. Must have reliable transportation since local travel may be required.

To be considered for the Intermediate Level:  Applicants must have 4-5 years of directly related experience

To be considered for the Associate Level:  Applicants must have 1 or more years of directly related experience

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or similar field.
  • Experience working with older adults and/or research participants, and their care partners
  • Demonstrated understanding of Good Clinical Practice and HIPAA 
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and assessment of laboratory values 
  • Strong commitment to community engagement and service, as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion

Work Schedule

General hours are between 8:00AM and 4:30PM Monday through Friday, though some flexibility to accommodate participants and community events is expected.

Work Locations

All work will be completed at the offices of the Research Program on Cognition & Neuromodulation Based Interventions (RP-CNBI) at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor (Arbor Lakes building, Plymouth Rd).

This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.

Additional Information

This is a 1-year term-limited appointment, with potential for an extension.  If an extension is not granted the appointment will terminate and will not be eligible for Reduction in Force (RIF) benefits.

Background Screening
