Job Description

The Student Success Specialist shall provide support to students from enrollment through graduation by providing leadership and maintaining an effective counseling program. The Student Success Specialist will adhere to the policies as specified by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.
 

Salary:
 Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees
Salary Schedule E2, Grade 2
Salary Range $48,712 - $64,473 (12 months, Exempt).
Salary step placement is based on experience per Drake State’s practice for awarding salary step credit.
 

Work Hours
: 8:00 am - 5:30 pm Monday - Thursday and 8:00 am - 12:00 pm Friday

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Student Success Specialist shall perform the duties as specified in conformity with policies established by the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees and the J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook.

  • Support students from enrollment through graduation
  • Provide leadership in maintaining an effective counseling program at the College to meet the needs of students
  • Coordinate student ADA services and serve as ADA point of contact
  • Collect, organize, and analyze information about students through records, tests, interviews, and professional services
  • Plan, implement, coordinate and assess Orientation to the College- ORI101 and Professional Transition - BSS220 courses to include the knowledge of STARS
  • Develop and implement strategies for increasing student and faculty participation in retention efforts
  • Administer all retention efforts
  • Use data to assess retention
  • Apprise students’ interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personal characteristics for vocational and educational planning
  • Assist students to understand and overcome social and emotional problems
  • Engage in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling techniques
  • Provide assistance as needed with identifying in-service training needs and professional development opportunities for faculty and support staff
  • Counsel students with academic, and personal concerns in collaboration with the advising center
  • Compile data on occupational and economic information to aid students in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives
  • Coach individuals and provide group educational and vocational guidance services
  • Serve on institutional committees as assigned
  • Stay abreast of new trends, best practices in the delivery of quality retention
  • Demonstrate an effective level of technological knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Initiate, maintain and assure teamwork among all college units through communication of the priorities of the instructional division
  • Ensure and facilitate the appropriate, orderly and timely flow of information from units within the counseling area to the Dean of Students
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior, loyalty, honesty, and integrity with all colleagues
  • Establish rapport and maintain a positive working relationship with administrators, faculty, staff, students and community agencies
  • Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts
  • Perform other work-related responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of Students and/or President

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with emphasis in Personal, Social, or Vocational Counseling, Student Development or related field or evidence of being within thirty (30) credit hours of earning a Master’s degree within twelve (12) months of hire from a regionally accredited institution with emphasis in Personal, Social, or Vocational Counseling, Student Development or related field
  • Copy of college transcripts (transcripts must confirm applicant meets educational requirements. If a Master’s degree is not earned at the time of submitting application, an enrollment verification must be included in the application)
  • Documented evidence of experience in Personal, Social, and Vocational Counseling/Student Development or related field
  • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time counseling experience
  • Proficient in word-processing, spreadsheets, and database applications
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and develop Support Plans for a diverse student population
  • Demonstrated exceptional listening, verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Licensed Professional Counselor
  • Experience with retention programs
  • Documented experience in testing data interpretation and analyses
