Basic Function

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of clerical duties of above-average difficulty including typing, filing and maintaining records; compile and process information for an assigned function or program.

Representative Duties

Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of an assigned program or office; type, file, process mail, answer phones and maintain records as assigned. E

Type a wide variety of materials from marginal notes, rough drafts or verbal instructions as necessary. E

Compile and tabulate statistical data; compile information form various sources and prepare appropriate forms. E

Maintain a variety of records, files and logs; sort, classify and post information and documents. E

Review documents for accuracy, completeness and conformance to established procedures and standards. E

Serve as receptionist for faculty, staff and students as assigned; greet visitors and provide information regarding programs, procedures and activities of assigned function or area. E

Receive, open and distribute mail. E

Operate a variety of office machines including personal computer and word processing software such as Microsoft Office. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

  • Basic policies, procedures and activities related to an assigned program or function.

  • Perform a variety of clerical duties in support of an assigned program or office.

  • Complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in the application and interpretation of existing methods and procedures.
  • Type at an acceptable rate of speed based on requirement of position. Learn to interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Education and Experience

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and one year of clerical experience.

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

Distinguishable Characteristics

The Clerk Typist II performs typing and clerical duties of above-average difficulty which may involve independent judgment in the interpretation, application or modification of existing procedures and methods. The Clerk Typist I performs general and routine clerical duties in accordance with clearly defined instructions or established office procedures. The Clerk Typist III performs a wide variety of technical and complex clerical duties which require highly developed clerical skills, independent judgment and extensive knowledge of the program or function to which assigned.

Position Description
