Duties & Responsibilities
Job Summary
  • The instructor in this position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Humanities and will teach 15 load hours per semester of English courses and perform other teaching related duties.

 

 
Essential Responsibilities
  • Develop and instruct first-year composition and co-requisite composition courses (with the possibility of teaching technical writing, creative writing and literature courses on rotation).
 

  • Day and evening classes can be expected. Instruction will primarily be face-to-face with instruction at the main campus in Farmington, but may also include classes at satellite campuses in Aztec and Kirtland. May also include online and hybrid courses.
 

  • Participate in continuous effective teaching practices, assessment, reflection and development of student learning to achieve outcomes.
 

  • Use the college’s learning management system (Canvas) to post course syllabus, attendance, and grades.
 

  • Work collaboratively with faculty and others on curriculum and program review processes.
 

  • Participate in regular professional development activities to remain current in best practices for rhetoric and composition and other areas of interest.
 

  • Maintain a minimum of five office hours per week.
 

  • Assist in mentoring part-time faculty.
 
  • Work with department and college-wide committees as assigned.
  • Participate in department, school, and campus meetings and activities.

Qualifications
Qualifications

Minimum requirements:
  • A master’s degree in English or related field is required plus two (2) years of part-time teaching at an institution of higher education.
  • Access to home internet, a personal computer, and telephone is required.
  • Demonstrate skill and willingness to learn and use multiple technology platforms to communicate with students.
  • The successful candidate will value diversity and have a multicultural perspective with adult/minority students; and have a high energy level along with a strong commitment to the community college philosophy.

 

 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of fulltime teaching experience.
  • Teaching experience at a community college.
  • Teaching experience with a diverse student body representing a range of academic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Experience with interactive instructional methods and student engagement is highly desired.
  • Experience with high-impact practices is highly desired.
  • Experience with traditional face-to-face, hybrid and online courses and the ability to use San Juan College’s Learning Management System (Canvas) as well as technology-enhanced curriculum.
  • Experience with engaging in department and college activities • Experience participating in professional development activities related to composition and/or education
