Job Description

The Disability Resources Specialist arranges and coordinates reasonable educational accommodations for students with disabilities in accordance with the American's with Disabilities Act. The Specialist will review various types of medical documentation and psychological reports in order to determine eligibility for services, advise students on appropriate educational accommodations, and train students with disabilities on various assistive Technology programs.

  • Work with each individual qualified student in an interactive process to set up appropriate educational accommodations, and provide continuous and ongoing individualized support throughout the semester.
  • In collaboration with student services, faculty and administration educate, advocate and coordinate on behalf of students with disabilities to ensure fairness, integration, and equality in access and opportunity and to promote student success.
  • Responsible for researching and providing recommendations for Assistive Technology solutions for students.
  • Training students on use and coordinating with other departments for implementation and updates to software programs.
  • Tracks inventory and equipment and software. Arranges for update, repair, and replacement of hardware and software.
  • Coordination of alternative text for students. Interfacing with publishers for accessible versions of text and conversion of textbooks into electronic text.
  • Interface with medical professionals, special education teachers, and other agencies in order to coordinate services
  • Communication with college faculty and staff to coordinate accommodations

 

Minimum Expectations & Requirements

 

  • Bachelor's degree with preference given to degrees in Rehabilitation, Counseling, Education, or other disability related field OR at least five years experience as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, Special Education Teacher, or in Occupational Therapy
  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and its implementation in aneducational setting
  • Regular attendance is an essential job function as it demonstrates dependability towards theperformance of job duties

 

Preferred Skills & Abilities

 

  • Experience providing reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities in a postsecondary or secondary setting
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish effective cooperative relationships with faculty and staff
  • Ability to establish and maintain record keeping system
  • Professional experience in a community college/higher education work environment
