ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The English Division offers courses in developmental composition and reading, transfer-level composition, literature, technical and professional writing, cultural studies, humanities, creative writing, film, and study skills. The mission of the English Division is to support our students in developing skills and critical approaches that will enable them to engage and transform the world around them. The Division is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, staff, and administration. We integrate diverse literary and cultural texts in our curriculum, affirm students’ multiple literacies, and foster pedagogical innovation. The English Division promotes a culture of mutual respect and collegiality among 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 35 adjunct faculty, who bring a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. The Division’s impact and leadership extend to the campus and community, including through the operation of the Writing Center.

 

Position Responsibilities

 

The English division is seeking candidates for a full-time tenure-track English Composition position with a Black and/or African American focus who are equity driven and student centered in their teaching practice for Fall 2023.

Candidates should be passionate about teaching and learning and committed to the mission of community colleges. Candidates should bring experience and expertise that is especially suited to enhancing the success of under-represented and marginalized student populations and contribute to the English Division's commitment to enhancing the success of Black and African American students. Candidates should have the professional and lived experience to teach composition/writing and literature classes that intersect with one or more of the following areas of expertise: African American rhetoric, Black language and literacy, African American Literature, Black and African American Studies, African and Diaspora Studies, Black Lives Matter, diverse and intersectional identities within the Black community, among others. Other course offerings can include the breadth of what our English Division offers based on candidate's education, experience, and interest.

Candidates should have the ability to teach in face to face and/or hybrid modalities, and participate in on-campus division work.


 

Qualifications

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in English or Composition/Rhetoric. Closely related degrees will be considered if applicant can demonstrate coursework, curriculum development, community work, or other experience in critical areas.
  • Experience teaching composition classes at the college level.
  • Professional and lived experience and expertise in working with Black / African American communities
  • Demonstrated experience to equity and inclusion in working with students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and identities.

 


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with online teaching using Canvas or equivalent CMS platforms.

This is a full-time tenure-track position beginning Fall 2023, continuing with annual nine month contracts. The salary will be determined according to the candidate's educational background, teaching experience and applicable work experience. This position has been designated as a bargaining unit position represented by The Green River United Faculty Coalition.
