Job Description

Position Summary

 

The Part-time English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher provides and coordinates services and instruction to special populations, such as the economically and educationally disadvantaged, and disabled, or those for whom English is a second language. This position will serve as the primary contact and provide instruction in English as a second language for all assigned students. Instruction is based on the individual needs of each participant. Willing and able to work with disadvantaged adults on the basic academic level.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Instruction: Actively engage students through the teaching and learning process by linking instruction and learning opportunities to the student’s individual learning needs, providing a respectful and supportive learning environment, requiring learners to engage in individual investigation and analysis as part of the learning process.
  2. Data Entry: Maintain a classroom management system as required by the National Reporting System guidelines, including creating and maintain records for each learner and regularly assessing the progress of each learner through personal observation and recorded accomplishment of learning objectives.
  3. Course Development: Assist in the development and delivery of courses and programs which meet the identified training needs of the community, including job readiness classes, GED preparatory programs, ESOL (ESL) instruction, distance learning programs (eg. Aztec, Essential ED), computer literacy training, and other special programs as defined by the Alabama Community College System (ACCS). 
  4. Student enrollment: Assist with learner intake and orientation. Administer assessments and interviews with adult learners to evaluate educational functioning level, develop a plan of instruction to meet individual learning needs, and maintain assessment and records for each learner. Help with the recruitment of new students.
  5. Andragogy: Demonstrate and maintain a high level of competence in the teaching field or subject area, including maintaining expertise through continuing education. Incorporate most current teaching techniques and subject area developments into student instruction.
  6. Networking: Maintain communication with students, faculty, and other College personnel by holding regular office hours for students, contributing to regular faculty meetings, and participating in other College activities and committees. Coach students on how to pursue continuing education opportunities through Wallace State Community College or community partners.
  7. In order to perform these essential functions, the Instructor must be present at work. Therefore, attendance is an essential function. 

 

Qualifications

 

  1. A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Teaching experience at the college level preferred.
  3. One year of teaching or tutoring experience and ESL certification (TESOL or TEFL) preferred.
  4. Experience in the use of a variety of instructional technologies, including distance learning technologies, preferred.
  5. Must have demonstrated competence in each area of instruction.
  6. Must have knowledge and understanding of current educational methods and strategies.
  7. Must be proficient in curriculum development, instruction, evaluation, assessment and advising.
  8. Must be skilled in the use of instructional technology, and able to adopt and incorporate new and emerging technologies.
