POSITION SUMMARY

 

This position provides vision and leadership for the management, general operation, and supervision of the Bookstore, Mailroom, Copy Center, and Shipping/Receiving. This position would have limited remote/hybrid work capability due to the nature of the work involved.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Leadership & Supervision

  • Motivates and encourages all team members to actively participate in continuous improvement activities in order to facilitate delivery of effective, high-quality services to both internal and external customers. May be asked to learn, lead and use Lean practices
  • Analyzes, develops, implements, and monitors services and procedures in alignment with college vision, values, and goals for college bookstore, mailroom, copy center, and shipping/receiving district wide to meet the needs of students and customers. Performs ongoing evaluation of performance and takes timely corrective action
  • Provides leadership to Bookstore, mailroom, copy center, shipping/receiving operations, furniture purchasing and designated archive storage area
  • Supervises staff and exempt manager, including hiring, evaluating, training, and scheduling
  • Communicates and settles disputes with staff and students
  • Stays current with course materials trends and works with the college to improve cost effective and ease of purchase options for students

 

College Collaboration & Community Liaison
  • Acts as primary contact for commercial vendors wishing to sell, distribute or promote products, merchandise or services to students and employees
  • Represents Auxiliary Services within the college and externally; collaborates with college departments regarding issues affecting Auxiliary Services

 

Auxiliary & Contracted Management
  • Manages and supervises bookstore operations, including merchandising strategy, pricing structure, physical layout, and marketing activities district wide
  • Establishes fiscal procedures and ensures accountability of financial transactions; implements cash, security, and inventory controls for bookstore.
  • Oversees district wide vending operations contract
  • Develops and implements textbook affordability initiatives. Stays current with industry trends and technology.
  • Develops bookstore marketing activities to increase sales and profit; maintains knowledge of current merchandising strategies and future forecasting trends; monitors shifts in products, services, and pricing; determines expansion or discontinuation of merchandise lines; meets with vendors and studies catalogs to compare prices and quality of merchandise for resale

 

Financial Oversight & Reporting
  • Ensures the financial viability of the college bookstore and copy center; develops business plan and prepares annual budget; approves and monitors all expenditures and purchase orders; develops financial reports as necessary; works directly with college auditors

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications

Associate degree from an accredited institution in business administration, marketing, merchandising or related field with Academic coursework in business administration, marketing or related field
-AND-
Three years of time managing in a retail environment, including purchasing, merchandising, accounting, and supervisory experience

-OR-

Bachelor degree from an accredited institution in business administration, marketing, merchandising or related field with Academic course work in business administration, marketing or related field
-AND-
Two years of time managing in a retail environment, including purchasing, merchandising, accounting, and supervisory experience


Core Competencies

  • Demonstrated knowledge of college/university bookstore practices
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and students from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated experience resolving customer service complaints and dispute
  • Demonstrated experience giving presentations to groups and corresponding in writing with vendors, business people and management
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a varied customer base
  • Knowledge of excellent customer service practices
  • Evidence of using best practices to improve operations

Preferred Qualifications

  • College Stores Professional (CSP) certification
  • Experience managing a college/university bookstore
  • Point of sale automated system experience
  • Experience managing a copy center, mailroom

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is a 100%, 12-month exempt assignment of the D1 band and grade
  • This position has a 1-year probationary period
  • All positions at Chemeketa are required to be available for work onsite as requested by the college.
  • Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends
  • This position may require the use of your personal vehicle for transportation between campus locations
  • Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire
  • Employees must maintain Oregon, Washington or Idaho residency as a condition of employment.
  • Successful applicants for designated positions must successfully pass a background inquiry, which may include criminal, driving, credit and full background checks. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary requirements are met.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Chemeketa Community College is considered a qualifying public employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, full-time employees working at the College may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan.
