Position Description:

An opening is currently available for a Research Associate in the Wired Brains lab of Dr. William Gross, MD PhD at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Our lab is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in the field of brain-computer interfaces using electrocorticography (ECoG) and functional MRI (fMRI). Our focus is on making a real-world impact, particularly in developing innovative solutions for people with aphasia and revolutionizing the way language function is monitored during neurosurgical procedures. Our team is currently working on machine learning models to decode electrical signals from the brain surface and create synthesized speech, as well as developing methods to monitor specific language systems during surgery while minimizing discomfort for the patient. Our lab is housed in a collaborative environment alongside several other neuroscience faculty. We have NIH funding and are supported by an excellent administrative team. In this role, you will be able to get your hands on the latest computer hardware, with state-of-the-art computers in-house and access to the Research Computing Cluster at MCW, containing a variety of supercomputer nodes, including a large GPU cluster. As a member of the team, you will work closely with many of our bright minds, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The combination of people and resources in our lab make this an excellent opportunity to bring your career to the next level.

As most of our research is focused on computational analyses using custom software, priority will be given to candidates with significant coding and machine learning experience, particularly using the Julia and Python languages. A deep level of experience with the Unix/Linux platform is also recommended.

Primary Functions

  •   Perform and develop routine and complex experimental designs for implementation in the lab.

  •   Develop new methodologies for lab procedures.

  •   Oversee ordering laboratory supplies and materials.

  •   Participate in meetings with principle investigator and research staff and evaluate/interpret the validity of data, develop methodologies, evaluate lab procedures.

  •   Teach and train new members of the lab in relevant techniques and analytical procedures.

  •   Organize and delegate work assignments.

  •   Perform library searches prepare materials for publications and grants.

Knowledge – Skills – Abilities

Knowledge of neuroscience, mathematics, statistics, machine learning, programming languages, documentation, and records management.

Data utilization, complex problem solving, ability to work well in a team environment, critical thinking, resource management, and writing skills.
