Research Associate, Department of Surgery

University of Virginia

Job Description

The Department of Surgery at the University of Virginia School of Medicine seeks Postdoctoral Research Associates to conduct research focused on vascular biology and physiology under the supervision of Dr. Bowen Wang. The primary goal of the research team is to determine the therapeutic and mechanistic implications of dietary restrictions in vascular cell phenotype changes (e.g., smooth muscle and endothelial cells) and vascular diseases (e.g., aneurysm, restenosis, thrombosis). The team also investigates both the upstream and downstream regulatory mechanisms that involve the following two emerging areas: protein post-translational modification (PTM) and gut microbiome. Additionally, the principal investigator has maintained long-term cross-disciplinary collaborations with established bioengineering groups to develop cutting-edge therapeutics and delivery platforms and conduct translational research using rodent and large animal surgical models of peripheral vascular diseases. A brief description of Dr. Wang’s research profile can be found via the following link: https://facultydirectory.virginia.edu/faculty/bw2pw .

Qualified candidates are expected to have mastered molecular/cell biology and biochemical approaches. Prior experience and publications on PTM, gut microbiome, and animal works are preferred but not required.

Postdoctoral employment is temporary and is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within the previous five years and who will be involved in full-time research or scholarship at the University. Employment as a Postdoctoral Research Associate is viewed as training and is preparatory for a full-time academic or research career, is supervised by a senior scholar, and allows the appointee to publish the results of his/her research or scholarship during the training period.
