Job Description

    • Reads, interprets and enforces local, state, and federal laws as well as the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of the Meridian Community College.
    • Patrols the assigned jurisdiction of the Meridian Community College Police Department.
    • Responds to calls for service including but not limited to domestic violence, alarms, emergency responses, traffic accidents, disabled motorists, etc.
    • Performs self-initiated activities such as enforcing all traffic laws and assisting the public in any way possible.
    • Issues citations and make arrests as needed.
    • Arrest, detains, and apprehends a variety of suspects by use of necessary physical means.
    • Provides traffic and crowd control for events held inside jurisdiction and provide the same for events outside jurisdiction as needed.
    • Investigate crime scenes, seizes and preserves evidence, interview witnesses, photograph evidence, serves warrants and subpoenas, and make arrests.
    • Administer Standardized Field Sobriety Test on suspected intoxicated persons in compliance with departmental policy and procedures and state and federal law.
    • Applies community-oriented policing techniques regarding dispute mediation, conflict resolution, behavior management, and crime prevention.
    • Checks abandoned and stolen vehicles.
    • Cares for injured persons and administers basic emergency medical aide.
    • Prepares reports as necessary including but not limited to crime, accidents, fingerprints, and other routine and non-routine reports.
    • Books prisoners into jail.
    • Photographs and properly documents arrests.
    • Participates in in-service and assigned training.
    • Testifies in court as required.
    • Checks and maintains all equipment, both personal and departmental, for readiness and proper working order.
    • Lock and unlock doors on/off campus as assigned by shift
    • Conduct escorts as needed or assigned
    • Provide office coverage as needed.
    • Any other duties assigned by a supervisor.

 

 
Required Qualifications
    • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
    • Must be 21 years of age at the time of hire.
    • Must maintain a Valid Mississippi Driver’s License.
    • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background investigation.
    • Must have medical clearance stating the employee is fit for duty.
    • Must be able to completed a state-approved police training academy within one year of being employed, if not already certified.

 

 


Preferred Qualifications
Certified as a law enforcement officer by the State of Mississippi.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently and routinely required to stand, run, twist, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel; hold and grip objects; reach with hands and arms to both ground level and overhead, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, bend, squat, crouch or crawl, talk, smell, taste, and hear. The employee must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, drag and/or move a minimum of one-hundred (100) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, texture perception, and ability to adjust focus. Position requires above average hearing. Must be able to undergo/complete rigorous physical training. Employee is subjected to mental and emotional stress.
