Job Summary

Our lab aims to understand the mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and how those relate to gross cardiac fibrosis and disease on an electrophysiological and molecular level. The Research Assistant will be involved in all aspects of the research from disease creation to whole tissue mapping, to cell line generation. With supervision, the incumbent will also be responsible for analyzing lines of mice with mutations in central genes involved in cardiac development and diseases. The position will require the employee to be directly responsible for, or assist other lab members, with the following duties:

  • Small animal handling, breeding, minor surgery, and organ harvesting
  • DNA, RNA, and protein extraction for downstream applications such as RNAseq, genotyping, ELISA, and western blotting
  • Clinical biospecimen banking
  • FACS sorting and cell culture
  • PCR and qPCR
  • Optically mapping whole tissue mounts
  • Maintenance of laboratory equipment and freezer monitoring
The ideal candidate is passionate about learning new skills and works well independently, or with a team. They will take initiative in the lab and have a strong interest in the cardiovascular system and electrophysiology.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Division of Cardiology is one of the largest clinical, research and training divisions of the Department of Medicine (DOM) at UCSF. Within the Division are sub-specialty sections for: Adult Congenital Heart Disease; Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant, and Pulmonary Hypertension; Cardiac Electrophysiology; Echocardiography and Cardiac Imaging; General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology; and Prevention. The Division runs several clinical practices in multiple sites, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars through ACGME as well as non-ACGME training programs. In addition, the Division has large patient care programs in the sections noted above, large clinical, Federal, and privately supported research programs and six faculty laboratories. The Division has 70 full-time faculty, 7 non-faculty academics, 36 clinical fellows, 6 post-doctoral research fellows, and over 80 research support and administrative staff. While the Division is primarily split between the Parnassus and Mission Bay campuses, fellows have rotations at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.


Required Qualifications

SRAI:

  • BA/BS degree in biology, or related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • General mouse handling and colony maintenance knowledge
  • Laboratory experience or coursework with DNA extractions for PCR and genotyping
  • General cell culture experience or coursework (tissue processing, preparation of plates and cell maintenance)
  • General basic histology experience or coursework (tissue handling, preparation of slides and slide staining)
  • Direct knowledge of scientific equipment (centrifuge, pipettes, microscopes, thermo-cycler)
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Excel and Word, and the ability to analyze spreadsheets.
  • Excellent attention to detail, good writing and communication skills, and the ability to work efficiently with limited supervision.
  • Desire to learn new techniques and skills, and the flexibility to move between multiple projects

SRA II: in addition to the above,
  • One or more years of recent, directly related work experience, following degree completion, that utilized the techniques or methods required in the position
  • Basic related scientific techniques and procedure from laboratory experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic Cardiac EKG and echo experience
  • Experience with isolating primary cells from rodent tissue
  • Experience with RNAseq and qPCR
  • Optical mapping and Langendorff perfusion prep experience
  • Experience preparing and sectioning frozen tissue for fluorescent immunohistochemistry and other histological stains
  • Direct experience with Protein extraction and Western blot
