The Director of Retention and Educational Planning plays a key role in developing, implementing, managing, and reporting on the College’s student onboarding (from the point when new students are ready to register through their first semester) and retention efforts. Collaboration with other units on retention initiatives, including effective integration of technology tools into processes and communication, is essential.

Occasional meetings at different SUNY CCC locations and in the community may be required; travel to conferences and/or recruiting events may be required. Essential Functions

Retention Strategy Implementation - 50%

  • Lead planning, collaboration, and continuous improvement of retention efforts to provide efficient, student-friendly, and responsive processes and support services.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, help develop and execute the onboarding and retention sections of the Strategic Enrollment Management Plan.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders to recommend and implement changes in student academic policies that impact retention.
  • Oversee and participate in functional leadership of Starfish Retention software.
  • Facilitate strategic partnerships with campus and community stakeholders to continuously improve onboarding, advising, career and transfer, awareness of community resources, and student success.
  • Oversee professional development of staff as relates to implementing retention strategies
  • Collaborate with CTIE to identify (and deliver, as possible) relevant professional development to faculty, especially on advising, including career and transfer.
Collaboration - 20%
  • Academic division heads, faculty, and CTIE on advising training and advising and to provide feedback on course scheduling
  • Financial Aid and Student Accounts on academic progress related to financial aid and billing and payment as needed for student progress and general student questions;
  • Office of the Registrar for registration information needed for general student questions;
  • Student Services, DEI Center, Learning Commons, and Accessibility Services for cohort support and engagement.
  • Recruitment/Admissions on the Admissions hand off and also on Open House, and, as needed, other campus visit events for students and/or guidance counselors.
  • Academic Outreach on the concurrent enrollment to campus transition for students.
  • Marketing to promote department services to students.
  • IT on software product selection, implementation, and maintenance
Management - 20%
  • Serve as the direct supervisor for Retention & Educational Planning staff, providing oversight in matters related to strategic planning, personnel administration, fiscal management, and assessment of efforts.
  • Oversee the development and control of budgets including not only the Retention & Educational Planning budget but also any grants for which the Director is the Principle Investigator (PI)
  • Oversee advising and career and transfer events.
  • Oversee the Department’s website (external and internal) information for students
  • Report on Department efforts
Other - 10%
  • Serve as a member of the Educational Policies and Standards Committee
  • Respond to student concerns and emergent situations, as required
  • Participate and attend professional development opportunities
  • Represent CCC within SUNY regional and state level networks
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • Excellent communication, organization, and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to implement systems and follow-up processes
  • Knowledge of and willingness to follow trends/best practices in onboarding, advising, and student success, ideally at rural community colleges
  • Intermediate-level, or higher, skills in utilizing retention software
  • Ability to work effectively to meet tight deadlines and demonstrate good judgment
  • Knowledge of basic project management skills
  • Technical skills to include, but not limited to: Microsoft Office: Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Google: Docs, Sheets
  • General knowledge of event coordination
  • Demonstrates commitment to accomplishing work in an ethical, efficient, and cost-effective manner
  • Ability to effectively convey information verbally and in writing, demonstrate effective listening skills, and display respect for and openness to other people’s ideas and thoughts
  • Ability to accept changes to job requirements, policies, workload, etc., as well as learn new methods, procedures, or techniques resulting from change with the ability to clearly approach problems and find solutions
  • Demonstrates support for the College’s goal of becoming a more diverse, inclusive, and culturally aware community and practicing anti-racist/biased behaviors

 

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in higher education/public administration, or related area and three years of relevant experience in administration, student retention, and/or supervisory management experience (or an equivalent combination of both education and experience)
  • Ability to work flexible hours and ability to work occasional weekends/after hours
Preferred Qualification:
  • Prior supervisory experience
  • Experience with Starfish Retention Solutions software
  • Community college work experience
