UMD's campus consists of more than 50 buildings on 244 acres overlooking Lake Superior, all built since 1948. Most UMD buildings are connected by concourses or hallways, providing easy access for students with disabilities and convenience for all students year round. UMD is also home for the Tweed Museum of Art, the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, and the Marshall Performing Arts Center. Other facilities include the Research and Field Studies Center, Glensheen Historic Estate, the Lower Campus, the Large Lakes Observatory, and the Natural Resources Research Institute.

UMD consistently ranks among the top Midwestern, regional universities in U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Colleges" issue. Approximately 85% of UMD’s undergraduate degree-seeking students are from the State on Minnesota (48% of the undergraduate population are from the Twin Cities metro area and 37% from Greater Minnesota). An additional 13% of the undergraduate students are from states other than Minnesota, and approximately 1% of the students are international. The University offers housing to 1,850 students in traditional residence halls and 1,100 students in apartment-style units.

The Systemwide Strategic Plan "MPact 2025" was developed during 2019-20, and the draft plan with commitments, goals, action items, and measures was made available for comment in October 2020. UMD integrated the campus's Strategic Plan with MPact following the Board of Regents approval of the Systemwide Plan in February 2021. The integration involved a refresh of the campus's strategic plan initiatives, which were presented to the Board in June 2021. During 2021-22, campus leadership sought additional input to aid in finalizing measures and
targets and to update the UMD vision statement.
