Job Summary

The College of Lake County is searching for a new leader, the Assistant Controller to join the Finance Department.

This position is reporting to the Controller in assisting complex issues and analysis, reporting and audit tasks. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for maintaining proper accounting procedures and all necessary financial reporting as well as all necessary analysis for Balance Sheet accounts and P&L analysis. This role partners with a broad range of key stakeholders across The College of Lake County (CLC). This position is a key role for the Accounting and Finance team.

Summary: Ensure timely and accurate accounting and financial reporting for the consolidated and separate financial statements of the College. Ensure timely and accurate processing and recording of financial transactions in accordance with GAAP, OMB Circulars and GASB for all activities of the College. Develop and monitor policies and procedures to ensure effective processes and controls exist and are followed. Manage General Accounting team, oversee Accounts Receivable and Student accounting team. Participate in, and lead all or part, of process improvement projects.

Required Qualification

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college of university in accounting.
  • Licensed or registered CPA designation required.
  • 7-10+ years of experience in accounting that includes general accounting, revenue recognition concepts, credit card merchant processing, and general AP is required.
  • Two years experience coaching and managing a staff of direct reports is required.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to execute initiatives while balancing day to day objectives
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with and influencing senior leadership.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) necessary to effectively interact with all levels of organization.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Products (including strong Excel skills).
  • Display high level of energy and thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to plan and prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with all division teams and management.
  • Ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with non-profit fund accounting or Governmental Accounting
  • Project management skills and/or experience would be a plus.
  • MBA desired
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

Summary of Essential Functions

Finance Operations Management (55%)

  • Manage general accounting functions, month-end close, update GL in the timely matter.
  • Reviewing journal entries, monthly accruals, budget variance review and balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Review and approve manual journal entries and reconciliations. Review, research, and document major budget variances.
  • Manage treasury functions including cash management, debt management and compliance, credit card processing and key role for cash investment strategies.
  • Responsible for Federal funds draw down and scholarships.
  • Prepare all necessary government agency filing.
  • Participate in or lead various finance/accounting department projects, or process improvement efforts, including design, implementation, testing, reporting and support. Manage resources needed for projects.
  • Prepare and/or oversee preparation of audit and regulatory schedules.
  • Coordinates all accounting actives necessary for all receivable funds.
  • Maintains and monitor accounts receivable that correctly records taxes, interest on investments, tuition and fees and State payments.
  • Perform financial reporting for staff, administration, Board of Trustees, State and Federal agencies.
  • Review student petitions for determining write off or adjustment to the accounts.
  • · Manage and collaborate all student accounts related transactions including account holds, Debt Recovery Programs (collections), payment plans activities.
  • Lax Levy Preparation

Strategic Leadership/Project Management (25%)

  • Provides values-driven leadership to build a high-performing team that provide excellence in customer service.
  • Assist in creating proper internal controls in accounting operations.
  • Research GASB/GAAP issues to ensure accounting best practices are being followed. Work with managers and staff to develop, implement and maintain standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in cross-divisional projects as assigned. Act as an Accounting resource, distribute information to team, monitor accounting impact on resources and procedures. Provide insight & expertise on processes and accounting ramifications.
  • Assist in special projects, prepare various financial analysis.

Personnel Management (15%)

  • Manage and mentor accounting team, establish goals, and monitor progress and alignment with department goals.
  • Provide oversight and direction to AR Manager, AP Manager, and General Accounting staff to ensure processes are efficient & followed. Assign resources appropriately. Ensure goals are aligned with the department. Responsible for accuracy, timeliness and completeness of staff work product. Supervise, coach & mentor direct reports.
  • Participates in formulation of business policies and procedures in cooperation with Controller. Recommends policy and procedures regarding internal controls for the College.

Other (5%)
  • Participate on strategic and /or functional cross-departmental teams, committee and councils at the request of the business services and finance leadership.
  • Participate in professional associations/ organizations and educational activities that enhance finance competencies, knowledge, and interpersonal skills.
  • Support Accounting projects as needed.
