Postdoctoral Research Associate

Northeastern University

Job Description

About the Opportunity

About our lab: Barecka’s group goal is to accelerate the adoption of new, carbon-neutral manufacturing methods for chemical, pharmaceutical and environmental sectors. We explore the potential of electrochemistry and discover new ways of turning CO2 into valuable products, develop better catalysts and separation techniques, elucidate chemical pathways, design more efficient electrochemical reactors, as well as model complex processes and evaluate their techno-economics. We also maintain close collaboration with the industry and end-user in order to ensure that developed technologies are scalable and have a potential to be adopted on the market faster than it usually happens.

About this position: We have an immediate opening for a postdoctoral associate to support research focused in the broad area of CO2 electrolysis on Northeastern’s Boston Campus. This position focuses on experimental research, and will include close collaboration with other group members, in particular graduate and undergraduate students exploring the experimental data in multi-scale models. Potential projects will include e.g., improving the stability of CO2 electrolyzes and integration of electrolysis into complex manufacturing processes. Our laboratory values diversity and expects all lab members to foster a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment.

The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing CO2 electrolysis experiments using gas diffusion electrodes or H-cell type reactors.
  • Improve the design and the operation of the reactors.
  • Explore different technologies for fabrication of cathodes (gas diffusion layers) and anodes.
  • Integrate on-line analysis tools to elucidate e.g., CO2 electrolysis reaction mechanisms and cathode degradation pathways.
  • Develop and write reports, publications, and grants
  • Attend and participate in research meetings/seminars
  • Participate in career development training workshops/sessions and networking opportunities for research and mentoring
  • Guide and mentor graduate or undergraduate students, including participation in training to improve these skills as needed.

Qualifications:

Must have a Ph.D. or equivalent by start date; be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship; work under the supervision of a senior scholar. All candidates should describe how they support a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment inside and outside the laboratory. This position requires excellent communication skills, both interpersonal and scientific, oral and written.

Qualifications:

Candidates should be enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary, and multi-project environment. The successful candidate will be able to work both independently and collaboratively. Previous experience in electrolysis or fuel cells will be an asset, as well as willingness to develop engineering solutions, improve experimental setups and constantly explore new technologies.

Additional Information:

The initial term of the position is one year with the possibility for renewal. The start date is immediate but flexible. For any questions regarding this position, please contact the PI (m.barecka@northeastern.edu).

Documents to Submit:

To apply, please submit: 1) your cv with a complete list of publications and contact information for references, 2) a cover letter that describes your interest in the position and your availability.
