The purpose of NC State Campus Health is to provide appropriate, affordable, accessible and high quality primary health care to eligible students, and to provide a comprehensive disease-prevention and health promotion program in the NC State University community. The major function of Campus Health is to provide outpatient care to the 34,000+ NC State students. Some level of medical care is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the academic year beginning in August and ending in May. Hours of service vary during the summer and during holidays and student breaks.

Essential Job Duties

The primary job duties of the Medical Laboratory Technician are as follows:
  • Interpret laboratory orders and perform lab tests, provide and process laboratory results to physicians and advanced practice providers.
  • Use proper collection techniques and procedures to process, handle, and dispose of biohazard specimens properly.
  • Perform venipunctures.
  • Participate in QA, QC, and Proficiency testing programs for competency.
  • Accurately and proficiently navigate EMR and LIS systems.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in fire and emergency preparedness drills.
  • Must report to work during Adverse Weather and related scenarios and for public health emergencies.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency and one year of laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four year university with a degree in medical technology; or graduation from an associate degree program of medical laboratory technology.
  • Knowledge of CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) and COLA (Certificate of Label Approval) requirements.
  • Skilled in use of laboratory equipment and in performance of procedures.
  • General knowledge of the basic pathophysiological processes being monitored and how medical laboratory science is applied.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some positions may require compliance with current Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Regulations.
  • Phlebotomy experience.

Required License or Certification

Technicians performing testing must meet the educational qualifications for performing tests as stated in CLIA ’88. Must be ASCP certified or eligible.
