Position Summary Information

 

General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Administrative Director of Advising, the College Advisor provides holistic advising to an assigned cohort of students from the point of admission throughout their academic career at Southeast Community College. This is a part-time grant funded position and subject to funding renewal during the Summer 2023 term.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Proactive and Developmental On-boarding
    • Evaluate admission test scores and transcripts, analyze pre-orientation student assessments, recommend interventions when appropriate, and advise students based on their interests, strengths, values and goals.
    • Advise students at New Student Enrollment and consistently engage with students from the moment of admission through the first term to provide messaging, connection and support. Establishing this sense of belonging and mattering will enable the student to start their academic path at SCC with maximum preparation and confidence.

 

Career Advising
  • Assist students in clarifying and confirming academic path and career choice. This may involve interpreting career assessments and discussing results with students to develop academic, career and personal plans consistent with their interests, values, and strengths.
Academic Advising
  • Provide first term academic advising for students within assigned academic cohort. This may involve explaining general education and degree requirements and evaluating transfer credit.
  • Provide accurate information and guidance to students as they make decisions about traditional classroom and distance learning options, selection of program of study, and SCC policies and procedures.
  • Assist students in developing an academic plan that integrates with their current responsibilities and life goals.
  • Refer students to appropriate support services such as Admissions, Testing Center, Transitions, Accommodations, and Financial Aid, as necessary.
Ongoing Success Coaching
  • Serve as a continuous resource to students within assigned academic cohort.
  • Assist students with academic, career, and interpersonal skill development to heighten their academic success.
  • Support, educate and advocate for students experiencing challenges within and outside of the classroom. This may involve referring the student to SCC services and/or community agencies.
Program Planning and Implementation:
  • Plan, develop, and implement a variety of programs and services which will increase success and retention of students within academic cohort and in the student population as a whole.
Collaboration
  • Interact with faculty and staff within SCC, at other colleges and universities, and a variety of outside agencies and organizations in collaborative efforts geared towards enhancing student success, retention and completion.
  • Increase awareness of and commitment to holistic advising at SCC among faculty, staff and students, and work directly with faculty within assigned academic cohort to plan and implement joint activities that foster student success.
Data Management
  • Use software and other designated tools to record and manage quantitative and qualitative data on students’ progress at SCC.
  • Monitor student success and retention, and provide individualized support when needed.
Professional Development
  • Participate in professional development opportunities in order to stay up to date on best practices in student development, advising, onboarding and overall student success and retention.

  • Work toward creating a welcoming, inclusive, equitable, and productive work and learning environment, where all students, faculty members, and college employees are valued and may contribute to their full potential, regardless of their differences.
  • Make concerted efforts to implement accessible and inclusive practices and processes aimed at creating a diverse and equitable learning and work environment.
  • Commit to fostering and maintaining a safe environment of respect and inclusion for students, employees, and members of the community.
  • Promote and support the College’s policies and programming related to access, fair employment, EEO, equity, inclusion, and diversity.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university.
  • Two (2) years’ professional experience working with students in an educational environment.*

 

  • Master’s degree may substitute for one year of required work experience.

Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from accredited college or university
  • Work experience in higher education setting in areas such as academic or career advising, academic success coaching, retention, or general student affairs.
  • Knowledge and ability to collect, analyze and interpret data in both written and verbal form.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Salary
$21.78/hr
