PENINSULA COLLEGE’S COMMITMENT TO EQUITYOur collaboratively developed shared definition of equity is that as a College “we aspire to ensure that all students, faculty, and staff have access to resources and support in proportion to their needs and that they feel respected, connected, and can thrive in their goals.” Peninsula College’s equity efforts are led by an Equity Standing Committee with cross-campus representation. The committee appoints equity work groups and develops, assesses, and updates an annual equity plan. That committee’s collective work has identified the need for a position that can lead the College’s work in equitable hiring practices and equity training for all employees and that can act as resource for the College’s equity partners by sharing expertise and leadership.
THE COLLEGE

Located in the northwest corner of the United States, Peninsula College is nestled in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. The main campus in Port Angeles, Washington, overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the nearby city of Victoria, British Columbia, and has easy access to the Pacific Ocean, Olympic National Park, and Seattle. Port Angeles is two hours from Seattle and a one-hour ferry ride to Victoria, Canada. The College is honored to serve six sovereign American Indian nations in the region: Jamestown S’Klallam, Lower Elwha Klallam, Quileute, Makah, Hoh, and Port Gamble S’Klallam.

The College is honored to have strong relationships with these six federally recognized Tribes in the College’s service district. The College is home to Longhouse of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse. It is the first Longhouse in the nation to be built on a community College campus. The College offers transferable Indigenous language courses in Klallam/S’Klallam, Makah and Quileute and Hoh languages. Instructional programs include a Tribal Homeland Security & Emergency Management certificate and an Integrated Indigenous Studies transfer pathway. The College is committed to doing more and taking future direction from the Tribes.

THE POSITION

Peninsula College is recruiting for a Multicultural Student Services and Inclusion Advisor that will be a collaborator in the continued development, implementation, and administration of a comprehensive range of goals and services to enhance the success of students from diverse populations. This person will work in coordination with equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts across campus to support students, foster opportunities for students to be welcomed and encouraged, and build (with others in a team-centered approach) opportunities for success. This person will practice, promote, and embody the values of inclusion, equity, and diversity. This person will have a positive influence in direct work with students and in collaborative efforts across the campus community. They will provide direct academic advising services to students aimed at increasing retention and completion, improving satisfaction, and enhancing overall success as the primary point-of-contact for students from historically marginalized student populations.

To ensure the college provides an inclusive educational and employment environment focused on strategies for success and equitable outcomes for all, we are seeking a candidate who has an understanding of, and experience with, successfully supporting individuals with varying backgrounds, including people with disabilities; people with various gender identities and sexual orientations; individuals from historically underrepresented communities; and other groups.

Duties include:

  • Collaborate across the greater campus community to support programs and services to support, retain, and advocate for under-represented student populations.
  • Be a point of contact for Academic Advising for Indigenous students and other historically under-represented students.
  • Academic Advising duties include:
  • Apply advanced academic advising concepts to provide proactive academic and/or career advising for prospective, new, and continuing students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Oversee the academic progress of students who are assigned to an area of study and provide proactive programming and advising interventions.
  • Assess students’ academic and personal support needs, following guidelines and professional standards (e.g., NACADA and CAS) to recommend appropriate campus and community resources.
  • Work with the advising supervisor and others to develop and implement proactive programming with learning outcomes related to academic success and retention of students.
  • Serve as a member of the new student orientation team developing learning outcomes and content that align with the mission of Peninsula College.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external organizations, including but not limited to Tribal Nations of the Olympic Peninsula and local school districts.
  • Participate in the coordination and implementation of diverse cultural events and programming to promote a welcoming and belonging culture, in collaboration with staff who support the Longhouse of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse and other campus entities.
  • Provide leadership and serve as club advisor to student organizations focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Supervise Student Peer Mentors.
  • Participate in campus and statewide Guided Pathways Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion efforts.
  • Serve on the Longhouse Team, and the Standing Equity Committee.
  • Represent Peninsula College on the statewide Multicultural Student Services Directors’ Council.
  • Coordinate and support the college’s participation in the annual Students of Color Conference.
  • Collaborate with FYE/COLL 101 faculty and support staff on continued development and engagement of this course and its tie-ins with equity and inclusion work.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with faculty and staff to create and maintain a campus climate that respects and values diversity, welcomes and fosters inclusion of all students, promotes an inclusive worldview, and ensures that all students have an equal opportunity for academic success and a sense of safety and belonging.
  • Approach all duties and assignments with an equity lens.
  • Work independently and in teams while maintaining professionalism and modeling the colleges Guiding Principles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Development, Higher Education Administration, or a related field or a Bachelor’s degree plus two years of relevant work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students on a wide variety of matters related to student success.
  • Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and the public from various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. Includes the ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English and to communicate clearly with native and non-native English speakers.
  • Proficient in the use of computer applications software.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work collaboratively with sensitivity to the dynamics of differences in race, gender, ability, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or other cases of cultural difference.
  • Experience advising students in a school setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated initiative with program development and implementation.
  • Commitment to the mission and philosophy of community college education.
  • Experience working in a higher education setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development, delivery, and assessment of educational, cultural, and social programming designed to improve the quality of the educational experience of culturally diverse, underserved, and historically underrepresented student populations, experience working with Native American and Latinx populations.
  • Bilingual

Physical Work Requirements:

Work is typically performed on the Port Angeles Peninsula College campus, in an office environment, and requires standing and/or sitting and using computers for extended periods of time.
