Job Description
In the spirit of service and with a student centric approach, the Disabilities Services Coordinator provides equitable access to learning for all students. The Disability Coordinator develops, directs, coordinates, and implements quality services to students with disabilities to allow them equal access to all college programs and activities. Lake Superior College’s Disability Coordinator provides academic accommodations, support, and advocacy for students with disabilities, and is the resource to the campus community on disability and accessibility related issues. This position conducts intakes with students requesting accommodations by using a variety of resources to determine status and needs, maintains confidential documentation, determines accommodations, closely communicates and works with all staff and faculty for promoting an inclusive environment. Daily interactions include current students, potential students, high school students, faculty, high school teachers and case workers, family/support systems, local resource agencies – Vocational Rehab Counselors being the most frequent, and MinnState personnel. This position assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure equal access for students with disabilities in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and ADA Laws.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as rehabilitation counseling, education, disability studies, higher education, counseling, psychology, or human services.
  • Two (2) years’ experience coordinating services for individuals with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience handling requests, assessing and implementing accommodations for individuals with documented disabilities.
  • Knowledge of laws and bylaws that govern disability services such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Association of Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD).
  • A working knowledge of adaptive computer technology and its appropriateness for students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with persons from diverse backgrounds and commitment to diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related field such as rehabilitation counseling, education, disability studies, higher education, counseling, psychology, or human services.
  • Five (5) years of experience in providing disability services to individuals, especially in a higher education setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and teamwork in the area of customer service.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to advocate for student needs and disseminate information regarding services at the community college and community.
  • Understanding of the dynamics and legalities in disability services and how they influence the college community.
  • Willingness to work with students who may become challenging.
  • Effective organizational skills to coordinate academic accommodations, track student demographics, and produce annual reports.
  • Familiarity with community resources that assist students with disabilities to attend college.
