Full Job Description

The Preschool Promise Instructional Coach responds to coaching requests and referrals to provide reflective and relationship-based coaching to both teachers and instructional leaders, while also supporting the implementation of Preschool Promise, a statewide, high-quality, preschool system. This position serves as a coach to early childhood educators in family and center-based child care settings, school districts, and other early education programs to meet program, classroom, and teacher goals, best practices standards; and to increase the level of job-embedded professional development, collaborative routines, and instructional leadership.
 
Required Qualifications:
 
Education and Experience: Bachelor degree in Early Childhood Education or related field (Human Development, Child and Family Studies, Social Work, Sociology, Psychology), or Step 10 on the Oregon Registry for Childcare Education and coursework in age three to five development. A minimum of two years of experience in an early childhood program that includes experience providing technical assistance and training, including coaching to early education programs and providing classroom observations, and/or home visits to families with young children. Experience supporting the primacy of families, their home languages and their cultures, and an understanding of how to engage them.
 
Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of inclusion and equity practices in preschool programs. Knowledge of how to best support the early learning workforce in all settings. Effective techniques of adult learning and relationship-based coaching practices. Must possess knowledge and skills to use equipment necessary to carry out job responsibilities (e.g. computer and virtual training software, cell/telephone, copiers, projectors, digital recorders).
 
Abilities: Must possess excellent planning, organization, and time management skills, and the capacity to build collaborative partnerships with stakeholders, and provide services that are culturally competent and appropriate to the needs of the target audience. Must be able to independently perform duties of the position efficiently and effectively. Requires the ability to communicate formally and informally with a wide range of contacts and demonstrate tact, diplomacy, empathy, and friendliness in dealing with people under stressful conditions, either by phone, through video, or in person. Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities. Requires timely ongoing documentation to maintain reporting requirements. Must be able to pass a Background Check through the Oregon Early Learning Division Office of Child Care Central Background Registry.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
Bilingual- English and Spanish is preferred.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Requires learned physical skill to operate computer keyboard, typewriter or other office equipment. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers. Requires hearing and speaking ability sufficient to communicate effectively in person, over the phone, and/or via online video conferencing programs.

Work is performed in a variety settings including office, online, and in the field at child care programs. Substantial time is spent working on a computer. Frequent travel is required. May be required to work evenings and/or weekends. Must be able to travel throughout the region and to other required opportunities, including overnight and/or on weekends. Requires a valid Oregon driver’s license and access to own transportation, or the ability to arrange for reliable alternative transportation.
 
Essential Duties:
Creates ongoing, trusting relationships with early education programs and a range of educators to develop the most conducive environment for learning and reflection, and establish collaborative coaching relationships.

Articulates and facilitates understanding of Preschool Promise program expectations, especially in the areas of Supportive Environments, Ambitious Instruction, Continuous Quality Improvement, Leadership with Knowledge, and Inclusive and Equitable Practices.

Delivers regular one-on-one coaching sessions to educators and instructional leaders of Preschool Promise programs, following the Oregon Early Learning Coaching Guidelines and employing specific coaching strategies to engage teachers and instructional leaders.

Utilizes reflective practices with Preschool Promise programs to facilitate goal setting, data evaluation, and observation feedback.

Supports continuous quality improvements, especially focused on the Preschool Promise Program expectations, NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators and implementation of best practices in early learning, inclusion, dual language learning, and social/emotional development.

Conducts regular, direct observations of assigned or referred educators while in practice, using formal and informal tools and provides feedback.

Uses technology to support Preschool Promise programs and assigned/referred educators through video review, feedback, resource sharing, and coordinated peer feedback.

In partnership with Preschool Promise administrators and teachers, creates coaching goals, action steps and identifies available resources through engaged data dialogues and reflective conversations.

Supports Preschool Promise programs in their use of data to create program and early educator goals.

Provides materials, resources, and recommendations to strengthen practice implementation and reach established coaching goals.

Serves as a resource in identifying appropriate research-based instructional strategies and interventions to improve outcomes for Preschool Promise children and families.

Uses coaching data to help inform training and technical assistance plans with Preschool Promise Specialists.

Participates in ongoing coaching Community of Practice provided by ELSI contracted Mentor Coaches.

Performs other related duties as assigned.
